Lord Vishnu is perhaps the God of gods of the Sanatan Dharma. He is the Preserver or the Sustainer of the world and hence considered to be the Supreme Deity. Owing to His almost omnipresent adorability in the forms of his various Incarnations as also His prestine image, He has perhaps the maximum number of hymns, orisons, prayers etc., devoted to Him which, too, spread countless scriptural and literary works. While selecting the material for this Book we have tried to cull numerous legends, hymns etc., from the original source. Our attempt has been to give a picture of Lord Vishnu in this small volume with authenticity and relevance to the overall context of this presentation' without neglecting His folklore popularity either. In selecting the Ten Incarnations of Lord Vishnu we have stuck to the list devised by the leading scholars of the country. We are proud to draw our readers' attention to the fact that the famous prayer 'Gajendra Moksha' is being presented for the first time in also the Roman script with its in English. The translation of the hymns have been done seperately in Hindi and English, keeping in view the general awareness of the readers about the scriptural terminology used therein with relevant foot-notes to ease their better comprehension. The idea is to make the message reach home notwithstanding the minor variations from the text to elucidate the point.
The due stress has been laid on the logical interpretation of the divine events to reveal their inherent importance which often gets lost in the blind adulations without any scope of an inde- pendent assessment. It is for this reason that instead of chronologically accounting the life events of the Incarnations, we have given emphasis on the over-all impact of their doings and teachings on mankind.
