Book Description

Introduction

The teeming herds of Africa are now a fading memory and the African continent is facing a new and graver threat overpopulation. The land is grazed bare. Each year, Africa loses more and more rainforest regions, wilderness areas and valuable farmlands, as the abused land turns to desert. The changes to the regional and global climate due to this ecological disaster mostly go unchecked.

Africa is at a turning point. We must make sure that the few isolated patch-es of wilderness remain intact for future generations. They are part of the complex web of life that has nurtured humankind and allowed us to become what we are today. Their potential loss is a threat to us and a threat to our planet's future.

This book complements When Hippo Was Hairy. It hopes to show that the rich heritage of African folklore involves the small creatures as well as the great and that we are all part of the great diversity of life that is now at stake.

It is hoped that some of you who read these and other similar books will care enough when it is your time to run things to bring this period of ignorance and greed to an end; to make amends with Mother Nature and to heal the wounds made by previous generations.
