Foreword
In the nation's march towards freedom, Delhi, the nerve centre of political cross-currents, played the pioneering and pivotal role-history of Delhi is the compendium of the history of the national movement. Throughout the process of the freedom struggle right from the uprising of 1857 and during the entire sequence of events-Satyagraha launched by Mahatma Gandhi in the shape of Khilafat, Non-Cooperation Movement, Civil Disobedience Movement, In-dividual Satyagraha and the Quit India Movement till the proclamation of freedom from the Central Hall of Parliament in 1947, Delhi, fully awakened and conscious, fired with the spirit of nationalism, spontaneously responded to the challenge of the times. In the process of the struggle, millions committed to "freedom or leave to die" suffered innumerable hardships and lakhs laid down their lives so that India lives in freedom. During the struggle, various cross-sections of society-rural folks, urban elite, persons of different professions, of all classes, religions or languages and from all political and social strata, became part of an indivisible matrix of liberty from which ambers of freedom flew far and wide turning into flames and ultimately these ambers destroyed the very foundation of the British Empire, whispering emancipation, freedom, hope, strength and life for India. The harder the conflict, more glorious the triumph. In the moments of freedom, glory and triumph, Delhi true to its heritage, will ever remember the sufferings and sacrifices of the known and the unknown Freedom Fighters. It is with this modest hope that in this Centenary Year of Indian National Congress, I consider it my privilege to dedicate this Second Volume of Who's Who of Delhi Freedom Fighters to the harbingers of freedom. The first volume was dedicated to the Freedom Fighters by my predecessor and freedom fighter, Mir Mushtaq Ahmed, in 1973, the Silver Jubilee Year of Independence. The present volume sponsored by Delhi Administration covers the contribution of those not included earlier and whose major life-long centre of activity had been essentially Delhi.

Preface
The publication of "Who's Who of Delhi Freedom Fighters" is an effort to honour the memory of people who suffered and made sacrifices in the cause of Independence, but stayed away from the limelight of publicity. This idea was originally mooted by Prof. Humayun Kabir in 1960, then Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. He observed that while important personalities of the freedom struggle would find their place in the histories of the period being prepared by various States of the Indian Union, thousands of lesser known heroes would be lost to history unless special efforts were made in time. Consequently, the Delhi Administration decided to bring out a publication containing brief life-sketches of freedom fighters of Delhi. The first volume of "Who's Who of Delhi Freedom Fighters", which includes some 3400 names, was published in 1974. A Hindi translation was published in 1979. This second volume of "Who's Who of Delhi Freedom Fighters" carries the task forward by publishing brief biographies of another 3000 freedom fighters. The material for this volume has been drawn from the National Archives of India, Delhi Archives, Delhi Central Jail Records, Deputy Commissioners Office and many other sources. Some of the material is based on interviews with surviving witnesses. Our endeavour has been to make the volume an authentic reference work. Included in the present volume are those freedom fighters who were either born in Delhi, or took part in the freedom struggle in Delhi or have now settled in Delhi. Their lives bear the imprint of important events which dominated the political life of the country, such as the Non-Cooperation Movement, the Salt Satyagraha, the Civil Disobedience Movement, the Individual Satyagraha, the Quit India Movement and the Indian National Army. An earnest effort has been made to make the list of names in this volume as comprehensive as possible. It is not impossible, however, that some names have been left out. These will be taken care of in future editions or supplementary publications.
