Book Description
Preface

Sri Gurudev is the self of Brahma. He is one and secondless divine entity which pervades and manifests in all things visible and invisible. He is ever pure, ever blissful and eternal witness to all happenings. He transcends all bhavas and triple gunas: sattva, rajah and tamah. He is the supreme yogi who unites jivatma with Paramatma, and thereby liberates man from the bondage of ego and ignorance. We offer our humble homage at the lotus feet of Sadguru, the embodiment of jnana and prema. By the grace of the beloved Gurudev, Swami Nigamananda Paramahamsadev, Nilachala Saraswata Sangha, Puri has been able to bring out the English version of YOGIGURU on the 9th February, 2020.

Yoga ordinarily means to add or to connect or to unite one thing with another. Yoga in its spiritual dimension implies the union of jivatma with Paramatma. The great yogi Yajnavalkya has said: "Samyogo ityukto jivatmaparamatmanoh." Apart from this, making the body firm is yoga, keeping the mind well and steady is yoga, bringing citta to the state of single tune is yoga, uniting prana with apana vayu is yoga, blending nada and vindu is yoga, controlling prana vayu is yoga, uniting Kundalini sakti with Paramasiva in sahasrara is yoga. There are also innumerable types of yoga in the scripture: jnanayoga, bhaktiyoga, rajayoga, hathayoga, layayoga, karmayoga etc. In the Gita Sri Bhagavan has described: "Yoga karmasukausalam". In Patanjala darsan it is treated as `Scittavrttinirodhah'. It is now evident that yoga is the substratum of all sadhanas. It has, presently, assumed international dimension as the people of the world have shown deep interest in the practice of yoga which brings all-round development of man. Yoga helps man to strike through the mask of maya which cannot spread its illusive network before a yogi. One cannot attain true knowledge without practicing yoga. More so there can be no salvation without yoga. Lord Sadasiva advises: "Vina yoge na devo' pi na muktim Iavate priye." (Yogavija,3 1). When one controls and channelizes the outgoing indriyas, intelligence and mind inward and connects these to Paramatma through yoga, one is able to attain salvation. Yoga emancipates man from its narrow boundaries of ego, selfishness, jealousy, enemity and endow him with sublime bliss, compassion, selflessness, service, sacrifice and love etc. But siddhi in yoga is attained chiefly by the grace of Sri Gurudev when he blesses a practitioner of yoga by noticing his love and sincerity in practicing yoga. It goes without saying that yoga is meant for bringing welfare to one and all but when it is utilized to harm others; it opens the door to hell for the practitioner.

Sadguru Nigamananda paramahamsa attained puma siddhi (complete perfection) in tantra, jnana, yoga and prema. He wanted to accomplish the welfare of the world by propagating the spiritual principles of Sanatana dharma, spreading sat-siksa and serving jiva treating everyone as the manifestation of Siva. He wrote and published Yogiguru in Bengali language in the year 1906 and afterwards it was translated into various other languages. It is a unique and monumental book in the world of yoga and it has inspired a lot of people to adopt yoga as a way of life by which they have got rid of their grief and suffering. It has transformed the life of common man who walks bravely to attain his divinity within. This book discusses briefly the quintessence of yoga, the underlying tattvas of yoga, the easy and comfortable methods to practice yoga and finally the attainment of siddhi in yoga. That apart, in this book he has emphasized the role of yoga in our day to day life and established it as a positive and unfailing step for meaningful living. This book chiefly consists of four parts: Yogakalpa, Sadhanakalpa, Mantrakalpa and Svarakalpa. In Yogakalpa Sri Sri Thakur discusses the supremacy of yoga and practice of yoga; in Sadhanakalpa he describes the various methods of sadhana and the comfortable ways to perform sadhana; in Mantrakalpa he deals with the importance of mantra, mantra caitanya and performance of japa; in Svarakalpa he focuses on breath and control over breathing air so as to bring success in life. On the whole, this book initiates man to yoga and ensures enlightenment when he performs yoga with unshakable sincerity and unceasing practice relying on the grace of Sri Gurudev.
