वेदांतो नाम उपनिषद् प्रमाणम्।
Vedanto naam upanishd pramaanam"
(words are the means of knowledge). Only by words of Upanishads this knowledge of self can be gained.
Upnishad word is derived from Sanskrit Dhatu "Sad" (सद्) - "Sad" means "to destroy" or "to loosen" or "to reach". "Up" (उप) means near. So to reach which is near. Who is the most near to me? So many objects Pen, chair, book, watch, my cloths etc. But the most near to me is "I". "I" is nearest to me but I have forgotten "I"- (Consciousness - Atma).
Ni (नि) - means well ascertained. Therefore, Upanishad means "knowledge of "I"- who is nearest to me. And for well ascertained knowledge of who am "I"? - I will have to study Upnishad from a capable teacher- who knows methodology of teaching Upnishads.
ॐ is the sweetest name of Ishwara (God). It is a sound symbol- which transcends all the three states of our life. Waking, dream and is deep sleep (Sushupti) and sustains them.
Everyone wants to be happy, secure and complete and wants to live one day more happily without being ignorant. Human being is self-conscious and endowed with the free will. This-endowments make man-kind to improve and be different. Because self-consciousness - human being Judges about him/herself and concludes. "I am small, unhappy, inadequate" - and whole life spent in changing/improving him/herself and the world around. This creates tremendous pressure- but by putting any number of efforts and accomplishing in many spheres- the persistent sense of "lacking something" doesn't go away. Then circumstances are blamed and from the depth of heart one cries "Why me?". This is not a personal problem- it is Universal.
If you analyse, you can see that the main reason of sorrows and afflictions faced are due to hurts and guilts, stressful life and sense of "lacking Something" - resulting to notions of being limited, insignificant and unsuccessful. This also is a Universal Problem.
Bhagvad Geeta and Upnishads address these basic human problems and point out permanent solutions (not patchwork) for those basic problems of human kind.
D a r. Pratibha Dave is voluntarily retired- Civil Surgeon and Chief District Medical Officer. It was her dream from her childhood to become a doctor, not with a view to pursue a lucrative practice yielding lot of money, prestige and fame but Just to Serve the humankind - particularly for deprived and suffering section of this country.

When she was working as medical officer in a civil hospital - she witnessed unusually large number of "avoidable looking." deaths on operation tables. Which she presumed may be because of lack of expertise in process & procedures of anaesthetising patients.
So, she took leave without pay and opted for Anaesthesiology as her specialisation - At that time there was not any Qualified Anaesthesiologist in any of the Civil Hospitals of the district. She did her M.D. - returned to the Civil Hospital - where she worked as a medical officer and not only worked ceaselessly to ameliorate and save operative patients from pain, other complications and fatal outcome, but spent a substantial portion of her earnings to help the poor in meeting with expenses of costly medicines and nutrition.
