About the CD

The guru-shishya tradition has always been an integral part of Indian culture. In case of performing arts like Hindustani classical music, the importance of a guru cannot bu over emphasised, since the learning process is primarily aural. The relationship between Guru and disciple is an intricate as a raaga itself. The Guru teaches a student the rigour of the discipline and yet frees him to improvise. The role of the guru is more than simply imparting the technical knowledge of music, as he enables the student to discover his own voice. This process enriches both a generous Guru and a sincere disciple – a good performance after all, affirms both. Just as a guru looks for the desire and determination to learn in a student, the student looks for guidance, inspiration and encouragement from a Guru.

The bandishes (compositions) in this Album are all written and composed by Keerti himself. The depth of the guru-shishya bond and Keerti’s own guru-bhakti is reflected in many of the wordings, such as Krupa karo Guru more, Guru Narayan Guru Parameshwar, Guru ki mahima jaanon, or Guru bina nahi mohe chaina.

This composition, launched on the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima 2012, is dedicated to the teaching fraternity who have provided true guidance to thousands, and have spread the essence of Indian heritage, tradition and culture amongst seekers of a deeper knowledge.
