The everyday chores, things done with an absent-mindedness, carry a simplistic beauty in their routine. Raja Ravi Varma, the pioneer Indian painter in modern times was one of those few artists who picked up simple scenes from life around him and turned them into groundbreaking works of art through his mastery over the medium of oil paint. One such masterpiece of the master artist, “Lady Making a Garland” has been presented in this oil on canvas.
The lady making a garland sits comfortably on a bright red velvet-wood chair, whose red hues behind the flowing black tresses of the lady create stunning contrast. The lady is draped in a traditional ivory Kasavu sari with a thin golden border, Kemp necklace and bangles, diamond-studded Mookuthi (nose stud), and Takka (round earring). A small red dot (Bindi) adorns her lovely face which is animated by her two large eyes that shine brighter than the jewels in her ornaments. The Kasavu sari is draped pleasingly around her youthful body to highlight the beauty of her forms, with its soft folds delienated by an intermixing of pristine white and grey brush strokes. On her lap, the lady making a garland has a gold plate that acts as a support for the floral art she is creating. A carved, round wood table that serves as the handrest of the lady in this oil on canvas has a silver cup and platter full of delicate pink flowers. With her right hand in which an unassuming jeweled ring shines, the lady puts the needle with a fine thread through the flowers, stringing together a fragrant white-pink garland. Behind the lady making a garland, a dusky green background and a marble pillar with dark pink drapes give the effect of the deep interiors of a vast household, in whose safety the elite Nair lady carries on her task.
