Embodiment of Compassion: The Seated Green Tara

This exquisite brass statue captures the serene and compassionate form of Green Tara, a revered deity in Tibetan Buddhism. Handcrafted in India, this artwork is a testament to the nation's rich artistic heritage and deep spiritual traditions. Green Tara is celebrated as the goddess of active compassion, embodying the wisdom and swiftness needed to overcome obstacles and alleviate suffering. Her serene countenance and graceful posture invite contemplation and devotion, offering a visual reminder of her protective presence. The deity is depicted in a relaxed, seated posture, a pose known as *rajalilasana* or the "royal ease" posture, symbolizing her accessibility and her active engagement with the world's troubles. Her right leg is pendant, ready to descend and offer aid, while her left leg is drawn up, resting on the lotus seat. This posture signifies her willingness to rise and act at any moment to help sentient beings. ––––––––––––––––––––

Symbolism and Iconography

In her left hand, Green Tara holds the stem of a lotus flower, a symbol of purity, enlightenment, and spiritual awakening. The lotus blossoms in three stages – bud, half-open, and fully bloomed – representing the past, present, and future, and signifying Tara's mastery over these realms. The branch of *ashoka* leaves she holds in her right hand symbolizes the dispelling of sorrow and the bringing of auspiciousness, a key aspect of her compassionate nature. The *ashoka* tree itself is associated with fertility and the removal of pain in many Indian traditions. Her rich adornments, including a delicate crown, elaborate necklaces, and armbands, are characteristic of a celestial being. The intricate patterns etched into the brass reflect the meticulous craftsmanship of the Indian artisans who brought this divine form to life. The material itself, brass, has long been used for sacred objects in India, believed to possess purifying qualities and to conduct spiritual energy effectively. ––––––––––––––––––––

Green Tara in Lore and Practice

The origins of Green Tara are deeply rooted in Buddhist mythology. Legend has it that she emerged from a tear of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, as he wept at the suffering of the world. Seeing his sorrow, Tara herself arose from the tear, vowing to help him alleviate this suffering with efficiency and skill. Her color, green, represents her vigorous, youthful energy and her connection to the earth element, signifying her active and dynamic compassion. She is often invoked for protection from fear, illness, and danger, and for the attainment of wisdom and enlightenment. Possessing this statue is an invitation to invite these qualities into one's life and practice.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
