Shakyamuni in the same stance as that which has calmed the minds of devotees for centuries now. Seated, in padmasana; cradling the almsbowl, while at the same time issuing blessings. Under the Bodhi tree in Gaya in India.

This would be a bitone sculpture but for the hints of golden embellishment along a single tier of the three-tiered plinth, the lid of the almsbowl, and the hair on His head. More of it in the fruit of the Bodhi tree, as well as in the twin plumage of the peacocks roosting in the canopy.

The ornate canopy of the Bodhi tree sets this composition apart from other seated Buddha compositions. It is perfectly symmetrical, with luxuriant sections of the canopy branching out surrounding the seated monk, as well as arching high above His sacred head.

The Serene Embrace of Enlightenment

This exquisite brass statue captures a pivotal moment in Buddhist history, the serene seated form of Lord Buddha beneath the sacred Bodhi tree. The meticulously crafted brass, imbued with a rich patina, evokes a sense of timeless devotion and spiritual depth. The figure of the Buddha is rendered with profound calm, his hands held in a gesture of meditation or bestowing blessings, inviting a sense of peace into any space. The intricate detailing of his robes and the serene expression on his face speak to the spiritual discipline and inner tranquility he attained.

Symbolism of the Bodhi Tree and Avian Companions

The Bodhi tree, under which Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment and became the Buddha, is a potent symbol of awakening, wisdom, and liberation. Its presence in this sculpture signifies the profound spiritual transformation and the shedding of worldly attachments. Perched atop the branches of this sacred tree are two gracefully rendered peacocks. In many Asian cultures, the peacock is revered for its beauty, immortality, and its association with royalty and divine power. Their presence here adds a layer of regal elegance and suggests a harmonious coexistence between the natural world and spiritual attainment. The peacock's iridescent plumage is often seen as representing a spectrum of spiritual qualities, and their placement amidst the branches of the Bodhi tree amplifies the sense of sacredness and divine presence surrounding the Buddha's enlightenment.

Artistry and Craftsmanship

The artistry of this piece is evident in every detail, from the delicate rendering of the Bodhi tree's leaves and branches to the subtle contours of the Buddha's form. The use of brass, a metal known for its durability and ability to hold intricate designs, allows for a tangible and lasting representation of these profound spiritual themes. The artist has masterfully employed a patina that highlights the contours and textures, giving the sculpture a rich, aged appearance that resonates with history and reverence. The base on which the Buddha sits is equally detailed, featuring ornate patterns that further enhance the artistic merit of the entire composition. This sculpture is not merely an object of devotion but a testament to the enduring power of skilled craftsmanship and the deep spiritual narratives that have shaped civilizations. It serves as a beautiful reminder of the path to enlightenment and the profound peace that can be found within.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
