14'' Eight-Handed Kali : Form Of Durga | Stone Statue

Kali and Durga are very close manifestations of Parvati, the wife of Shiva. They are both wrathful and take after the all-annihilating aspect of their husband. Kali, of course, has the darker complexion of the two, which earns Her the epithet.

As such, the Kali that you see on this page, by virtue of being carved from the naturally jet black Kadappa stone, is a beautifully accurate iconography. She is the ashtabhujadharini and is seated in lalitasana, with a wrathful demi-deity at Her feet.

This may be a relatively calm portrayal of Kali. This is despite the skullcup and the severed head, in addition to all the weaponry. The limestone medium allows for considerable detailing of anatomy and adornment, bringing out the personal beauty of Devi Kali.

Embodying Divine Power: The Eight-Handed Goddess of Transformation

This exquisite stone statue captures the formidable and transformative essence of a powerful goddess, intricately carved from the very stone of South India, a region renowned for its ancient artistic traditions. With a commanding presence and a multi-faceted depiction, this sculpture is more than just a decorative piece; it is a conduit to profound spiritual energies and a testament to masterful craftsmanship. The deity is presented with eight arms, each extended with purpose, symbolizing her omnipresence and her ability to engage with all aspects of existence simultaneously. In one hand, she holds a trident, a powerful symbol of destruction and creation, reminiscent of Lord Shiva's own iconography. Another hand grasps a sword, representing the power to cut through illusion and ignorance, while others may bear a discus, a skull-cup, or other symbolic implements, each signifying a different facet of her divine authority. The sheer number of arms suggests her capacity to manage myriad tasks, protect her devotees from all directions, and overcome any obstacle. The form itself is a visual narrative of strength and beauty. Adorned with elaborate jewelry and flowing garments, the goddess exudes a regal aura. The detailed carvings on her attire and ornaments speak to the meticulous skill of the artisans, who have brought this divine figure to life through their dedication and expertise. The dynamic posture, though seated, conveys immense energy, hinting at the primal forces she commands. The eight-handed form is often associated with fierce aspects of the divine feminine, capable of vanquishing evil and restoring cosmic balance. In some traditions, this powerful manifestation is linked to Durga, the warrior goddess who battles demons like Mahishasura, the buffalo demon, thus protecting the universe. She represents the untamed, primal energy, the destructive force that clears the way for renewal and growth. The raw, natural beauty of the stone, expertly shaped, further emphasizes her connection to the fundamental powers of the cosmos.

A Legacy Carved in Stone

Hailing from the culturally rich landscape of South India, specifically Mahabalipuram, this statue is a legacy of a time-honored art form. Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is famous for its rock-cut temples and monolithic sculptures, carved by the Pallava dynasty. The artisans of this region have inherited centuries of knowledge and technique, passed down through generations, ensuring that each sculpture is not merely an object but a piece of living history. The choice of stone, likely granite or a similar durable material, guarantees that this divine representation will endure for ages, a timeless beacon of spiritual significance and artistic excellence. Bringing this statue into your home is to invite a piece of this profound cultural heritage and spiritual devotion into your personal space.
