Yakushi Nyorai: The Eastern Healer
In Mahayana Buddhism, the Medicine Buddha, also known as Bhaisajyaguru, is revered as the embodiment of healing and the alleviator of suffering. He is believed to have made twelve vows upon attaining enlightenment, all focused on relieving the ailments and hardships of sentient beings. These vows encompass everything from curing illnesses and disabilities to liberating beings from moral and spiritual darkness.
The belief in the Medicine Buddha is especially prominent in Tibet, Nepal, and other regions influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. He is often invoked for healing, longevity, and the prevention of disease. His mantra is a powerful tool for invoking his blessings and connecting with his healing energy. Practitioners often visualize the Medicine Buddha emanating light and healing energy, directing it towards themselves or others in need.
According to Buddhist cosmology, the Medicine Buddha resides in the Pure Land of Vaiduryanirbhasa, the "Pure Lapis Lazuli Land," located in the eastern part of the cosmos. This pure land is described as a place of perfect health, happiness, and spiritual fulfillment, free from the suffering and defilements of the ordinary world. The presence of this statue serves as a potent reminder of the Medicine Buddha’s unwavering commitment to healing and the possibility of attaining perfect well-being.
