The Sudarshan Chakra was considered Lord Vishnu's wheel of time throughout the Vedic period. However, by the late medieval era, Sudarshan Chakra had evolved into "Ayudha Purush," signifying a furious avatar of Lord Vishnu and was considered the weapon of enemy annihilation. Lord Vishnu is shown with the Chakra in his right rear hand of the four. Lord Vishnu wears the Sudarshan Chakra as a ring on his index finger. This brass lamp decorated with beautiful motifs mainly focuses on the use of this divine symbol in increasing the auspiciosity of the light which is also a medium for offering the agni or fire to the almighty.

An Emblem of Divine Illumination

This exquisite brass lamp, a testament to Indian craftsmanship, stands as a beacon of spiritual devotion and artistic excellence. Its design is deeply rooted in the rich tapestry of Hindu mythology and tradition, making it a powerful centerpiece for any sacred space. The lamp features ten wick holders arranged in a radiant circular pattern, symbolizing the ten divine qualities of Lord Vishnu or the ten avatars that have graced the earth in various epochs, as per Vaishnava tradition. The warm glow emanating from its ten flames represents the dispelling of darkness and ignorance, ushering in enlightenment and prosperity.

Symbolism of the Vishnu Chakra

Crowning this magnificent lamp is the divine Sudarshana Chakra, Lord Vishnu's celestial discus. In Hindu lore, the Sudarshana Chakra is more than just a weapon; it is a symbol of cosmic order, righteousness, and the ultimate power that protects the universe from evil forces. It embodies the cyclical nature of time and the unyielding force of divine will. Its presence atop this lamp imbues the vessel with profound spiritual significance, signifying the presence and blessings of Lord Vishnu. The intricate detailing of the Chakra reflects the skilled artistry of the artisans who have meticulously hand-fashioned this piece.

Artistry and Tradition

Crafted in India, a land renowned for its ancient artistic heritage, this lamp is a product of generations of skill passed down through families of artisans. The choice of brass, a metal considered sacred and auspicious in many Hindu rituals, further enhances its devotional value. Brass is known for its durability and its ability to age gracefully, developing a patina that speaks to its history and use. The entire structure, from the broad, decorative base to the elaborately detailed Chakra, showcases a profound understanding of form and spiritual symbolism. The twisting tendrils and sculpted heads adorning the stem evoke the grandeur and mystique often associated with ancient Indian temple architecture and iconography.

A Beacon of Auspiciousness

This ten-wick lamp is not merely an object of beauty but a functional tool for spiritual practice. It is ideal for use during pujas, festivals, and other significant religious ceremonies. Lighting this lamp is an act of invoking divine presence, seeking blessings for peace, health, and abundance, and celebrating the triumph of light over darkness. It is believed that the continuous flame symbolizes the eternal nature of the divine and the continuity of life. Whether placed in a home altar, a temple, or as a decorative piece in a space dedicated to contemplation, this brass lamp serves as a constant reminder of the divine grace that surrounds us. Its substantial size and robust construction ensure it will be a cherished heirloom, bringing its radiant energy to your space for years to come.

The Power of Light: Understanding the Role of Oil Lamps in

Hinduism Hinduism is a boon to human society for it guides everyone to follow their Dharma and rise above the material concept of life. Hinduism is also known as “Sanatan Dharma”. These are Sanskrit terms in which Sanatan means “eternal” and Dharma means “Intrinsic nature or occupation”. Thus it deals with the intrinsic nature or the real identity of the living entities; that which can never be taken away from them. The principles of Hinduism are given in the Vedic literature or scriptures that are considered “Apaurusheya”; they have not been written by any ordinary person but have been compiled by Vyasadev, the literary incarnation of the Supreme Lord Krishna. The word “Veda” means complete knowledge, both material and spiritual. The knowledge in Vedic literature is so vast and precise that if one looks carefully, he will notice that nothing is sentimental or imaginary but is based on facts and truth. There is a clear description and information about the identity of all living beings, the nature of the Absolute Truth, the reason for the existence of this world, the information about the world beyond this universe, and the relationship between us and God, the Absolute Truth.

Why do we light a lamp?

There are many rituals recommended in the Vedas for engaging our body and mind in the service of God. One of them is the lighting of ghee or oil lamps before the deity. According to the Vedic injunctions, all auspicious functions begin with lighting a lamp. It has a great spiritual significance. It is believed that the light of the lamp symbolizes “knowledge”, the wick symbolizes the false ego of the living entity, and ghee (clarified butter) or oil symbolizes all the negative tendencies (Anarthas) accumulated in the heart such as greed, lust, anger, and envy. When the lamp is lit by spiritual knowledge, all the Anarthas are exhausted, and the false ego, which is the root cause of conditional life, is also burnt. Therefore, the lamp is lit before the Lord as a sacrifice of our false ego in His service. Just as the light of the lamp dissipates all darkness, similarly, the light of knowledge dissipates ignorance of the Jivas and enables us to realize our real identity and purpose of life.

Why only an oil or ghee lamp?

One may question why only an oil lamp is lit before the Lord and why not an artificial light source. This may sound logical but lighting a lamp has a further spiritual significance. The flame of the light in a lamp always burns upwards indicating that by cultivating spiritual knowledge, one achieves the highest perfection of life and is always victorious. Also, a traditional lamp is the purest form of offering.

In almost every house of a follower of Sanatan Dharma, an oil or ghee lamp is lit before the altar of the Lord or before the Tulsi plant. Some people light it at dawn, some at dusk, and some people prefer to light it at dawn and dusk. Either ghee or sesame oil can be used to burn the wick. Vaishnavas (devotees of Lord Vishnu or Krishna) especially light a ghee lamp every day in the month of Kartik to offer their love and devotion to the Lord.
