Shashabhujadhari dancing Shiva. A raised limb, the hip jutting out laterally at a sharp angle. Not the ferocious, all-annihilating stance of the most popular Nataraja image; but the lord (‘raja’) of the performing arts (‘nata’) nevertheless.

The only hint of wrath, however, is to be found in the Lord’s gaze. The rest of the divine form has been executed with soft lines and gentle curves. The deep black colour of Kadappa stone medium adds a sense of solemnity and sattvaguna to the iconography.

The numerous etchings on the surface of the figure, to indicate detail of attire, adornment, and weaponry, are a silvery white colour. Its ample prevalence in the work makes this a striking bitone sculpture.

Embodying Cosmic Rhythm and Divine Power

This exquisite stone statue captures the multifaceted essence of Lord Shiva in his iconic form as Nataraja, the Lord of the Dance. Carved from rich Katappa stone, the intricate details and dynamic pose of the deity evoke a sense of awe and reverence. The deep, lustrous black of the stone serves as a stark contrast to the finely etched white patterns that adorn Shiva's form, highlighting every sculpted muscle and flowing garment. The representation of Shiva with six hands is particularly significant. Each hand is poised with a specific gesture or carries a symbolic object, collectively representing his manifold powers and cosmic functions. In one set of hands, he holds the Damaru, a small drum whose rhythmic beat is believed to be the sound of creation itself. Another set of hands holds the Agni, or sacred fire, symbolizing destruction and regeneration – the cyclical nature of existence where all things are dissolved and reborn. The remaining hands are in various mudras (hand gestures), offering blessings, dispelling fear, or indicating a state of divine grace and control.

The Dance of Existence

Shiva's dance, known as the Tandava, is not merely a physical movement but a profound representation of the universe's eternal cycle of creation, preservation, and destruction. It is a cosmic ballet that unfolds across time and space, maintaining the balance of the cosmos. The dynamic posture of the Nataraja statue, with one leg raised and the other crushing the demon Apasmara Purusha (symbolizing ignorance and ego), signifies Shiva's victory over illusion and his role in guiding humanity towards enlightenment. The coiled cobra around his neck, a common motif in Shiva iconography, represents his mastery over death and his inherent power to overcome the most formidable obstacles.

Artistry and Spirituality

The craftsmanship of this statue is truly remarkable. The skilled artisans have painstakingly etched delicate patterns that flow across Shiva's headdress, torso, and the elaborate halo that surrounds him. These intricate designs are not merely decorative; they are imbued with symbolic meaning, reflecting the divine patterns that govern the universe. The choice of Katappa stone, known for its durability and ability to hold fine detail, ensures that this masterpiece will endure for generations, a timeless testament to devotion and artistic excellence. This sculpture is more than an object of art; it is a conduit for spiritual connection, inviting contemplation of the divine forces that shape our reality.
