At the apex of the arch resides the Kirtimukha, the “Face of Glory.” This fearsome yet auspicious motif is a powerful guardian figure in Hindu and Buddhist iconography. Legend has it that Kirtimukha was born from Shiva’s wrath, a manifestation of his fiery anger directed towards a gluttonous demon. Consumed by insatiable hunger, the demon threatened to devour the entire universe. Shiva, in his divine wisdom, commanded the demon to devour himself. The demon, obedient to the divine will, consumed everything but his face, which Shiva then declared would forever adorn the entrances to temples and sacred spaces. Thus, the Kirtimukha represents both destructive power and divine justice, warding off negativity while radiating blessings.
