Sangeet(Music) and Vidya(knowledge) have always held the highest prominence in Indian
culture. Devi Saraswati is the manifestation of divinity representing the highest of possibilities for
mankind to achieve excellence in these exotic arts. As per the scriptures, Devi Saraswati is the
daughter of the creator of the universe, Lord Brahma, and the goddess of music, knowledge,
clarity, and wisdom. She blesses her devotees with divinity in their music and insights into their
knowledge. Both scholars and musicians are bestowed with her grace. She finds her earliest
mention in the rich text of Vedas which refers to her both as a river and deity.
Since her earliest depictions, Devi has been illustrated as a beautiful young woman with a radiating face. That same glaze could be found emanating from this beautiful piece of art as well. Made using the ancient Madhuchista Vidhana technique, this bronze statue brings out the most gracious form of Devi adorned with the purity of heart and mind. She is seated on a swan, which symbolises the silence of eternal peace. On one hand of hers is a Pustaka(book) symbolising knowledge, on the other hand, a mala(garland) depicting worship and devotion. In her other two hands, she holds Veena, an Indian classical instrument from which emerges the cosmic sound of existence. Her one foot is touching the ground while the other resting on the back of the swan. The face of Devi looks drenched with bliss in the ocean of the divine.
Devi Saraswati doesn't only represent knowledge but the experience of the beyond. She takes away discriminatory minds by harmonizing our hearts with the divine, and the sculptor is the most vibrant embodiment of that possibility.
