As the goddess embodiment of purity of light and knowledge, this bronze sculptural work presents her in her typical iconography. Her heroic ‘virasana’ posture is seated on a raised pedestal where she is gracefully playing her veena. As part of the triad of the Tridevi, Saraswati, along with Lakshmi and Parvati has remained in our memory as one of the most powerful Mother Goddess, whose attributes serve to guide us over the virtues of the fine arts, wisdom, and learning. In this bronze ‘panchaloha’ image that is made in the ‘madhuchista vidhana’ fashion, Saraswati’s four armed form holds a book on the left and the rosary on the right – signifying piety and meditation, and knowledge of the Vedas. Saraswati’s act of playing the veena is also symbolic – as her preferred musical instrument, its sound governs the creative arts and sciences, and by making such melodious sound, Saraswati is expressing that knowledge which makes such a harmony. Therefore, we see that all her attributes come together to form a conclusive whole. Moreover, her four arms are symbolically mirroring Brahma’s four heads resonating the spirit of the mind, intellect, imagination, and self consciousness.

Another magnificent example of the bronze image of Saraswati from Swamimalai can be accessed here, where the viewer can not only witness a more refined and larger image of hers, but also a large ‘prabhamandala’ that is ornate with a ‘kirtimukha’ arching over the elaborate throne of the mother goddess.
