Dakshinamurti literally translates to the murti that faces South (‘dakshina’). For Lord Shiva, this epithet captures the divine as teacher. Dakshinamurti Shiva is the personification of knowledge; He is the original guru and authority of the shastras.

The murti that you see on this page captures the traditional Dakshinamurti iconography. Shiva is seated on a mound of rock. He is surrounded by the finest mortal gurus, who turn to Him and look up to Him in their quest for knowledge. They are all facing dakshina disha themselves. Beneath the foot of Shiva’s pendant leg is, of course, avidya-roopi Apasmara.

The most striking aspect of Dakshinamurit Shiva is the luxuriant canopy rising behind the seated figure. Carved in bronze, it is the colour of a waxy, molten gold and is sure to add divine glamour to the traditional Indian home or office.

The Auspicious Guru of Knowledge

Embrace the profound wisdom and serene presence of Dakshinamurthy, a revered form of Lord Shiva embodying knowledge and spiritual guidance. This exquisite bronze statue captures the divine teacher in his characteristic posture, seated serenely beneath a magnificent banyan tree. The intricate details of the statuary, from the flowing leaves of the tree to the peaceful expression on the deity's face, speak of the masterful craftsmanship involved in its creation. Each element is rendered with remarkable precision, reflecting the devotional artistry passed down through generations. The banyan tree is not merely a backdrop but a significant symbol in Hindu tradition. It is believed to represent immortality and the cosmic tree, connecting heaven, earth, and the underworld. In this depiction, the tree's expansive canopy signifies the vastness of Shiva's knowledge and his role as the ultimate guru. The divine form of Dakshinamurthy is seated in Padmasana (lotus posture), his hands in Chinmudra, a gesture signifying supreme consciousness and the union of the individual soul with the universal soul. This pose is indicative of deep meditation and the imparting of divine wisdom. The base of the statue is adorned with figures of disciples, their faces turned upwards in reverence, listening attentively to the teachings of the divine guru. These figures represent various beings, from sages to ordinary mortals, all seeking enlightenment. The presence of these disciples underscores Dakshinamurthy's role as a dispeller of ignorance and a beacon of spiritual illumination for all. The entire composition radiates an aura of tranquility and profound learning, making it a powerful centerpiece for any sacred space. –––––––––––––––––––

A Symbol of Divine Wisdom and Serenity

This resplendent bronze statue is crafted from Panchaloha, a sacred alloy of five metals—gold, silver, copper, zinc, and iron. This traditional blend is believed to possess unique spiritual and healing properties, enhancing the potency of the divine energies embodied within the sculpture. The lustrous finish of the bronze adds to its regal and timeless appeal, making it a cherished heirloom. The iconography of Dakshinamurthy is deeply rooted in ancient Vedic traditions. He is the personification of Jnana (knowledge) and the master of all arts, including music, dance, and yoga. It is said that when the gods themselves sought to understand the deepest mysteries of the universe, they turned to Dakshinamurthy. His teachings are not through spoken words, but through silent contemplation and the profound understanding that blossoms within the hearts of his devotees. Invoking Dakshinamurthy is believed to grant clarity of thought, sharpen intellect, and remove obstacles on the path to spiritual growth. This meticulously crafted statue serves as a constant reminder of the boundless wisdom that awaits those who seek it with devotion and sincerity.
