The Divine Healer: Medicine Buddha

This exquisite brass statue depicts Bhaisajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha, a revered deity in Mahayana Buddhism. He is the Buddha of healing and a symbol of compassion and wisdom. In Buddhist lore, Medicine Buddha is said to have vowed to liberate all sentient beings from the suffering of disease and the cycle of rebirth. His lapis lazuli aura, adorned with vibrant red and turquoise inlays, evokes a sense of celestial radiance and profound serenity. The intricate detailing on the brass, from the serene expression on his face to the symbolic attributes he holds, speaks to the skilled craftsmanship and spiritual devotion of the artisans who created this piece. ––––––––––

Symbolism and Significance

Medicine Buddha is often depicted seated in the lotus position, with his right hand extended downwards, palm facing outwards, in the gesture of *varada mudra* (the gesture of granting boons). His left hand rests in his lap, holding a bowl filled with *amrita*, the nectar of immortality and healing. In this particular depiction, the Buddha holds a sprig of the *Aruna* flower, another symbol associated with healing and medicinal properties. The lapis lazuli, a stone historically prized for its deep blue hue and believed to possess protective and healing qualities, further enhances the iconography of the Medicine Buddha. Its presence in this sculpture connects it to ancient traditions where precious stones were incorporated into sacred objects for their spiritual and aesthetic significance. The entire composition, set against a richly ornamented throne, signifies his enlightened status and the power he wields to alleviate suffering. ––––––––––

A Legacy of Healing and Compassion

The cult of Medicine Buddha gained prominence in the 7th century CE, particularly in Tibet and East Asia. He is invoked to cure physical and mental ailments, to overcome obstacles, and to attain spiritual liberation. His presence is believed to purify negative karma and bring peace and well-being. This meticulously handcrafted statue, originating from India, embodies the deep spiritual heritage of the region and serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring principles of healing, compassion, and enlightenment. Placing this sacred effigy in your home or meditation space can create an atmosphere of tranquility and inspire a focus on well-being, both for oneself and for others. The detailed inlay work not only adds visual splendor but also carries symbolic weight, reflecting the multifaceted nature of the Medicine Buddha's blessings.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
