Sculpture, an artistic
form in which hard or plastic materials are worked into three-dimensional art
objects. A statue is a sculpture. Within the field of stone sculpting, there is
a tremendous amount of variety. Granite, marble, Soapstone,
alabaster, sandstone, limestone, etc are some common materials. Each is chosen
for a combination of reasons, including softness, availability, and color or
finish.
A small statue
is known as a figurine or statuette- a three-dimensional sculpture that
represents a human, deity, or animal, or, in practice, a pair or small group of
them. Whereas large
statues are called colossus, a statue that is considerably larger than
life-size. They are known from ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, China, and
Japan.
