The evolution of man and his culture carried along an increasingly cultivated indigenous knowledge base, among other things, about health and related healing systems. Tracing the roots one reaches into Vedic Age, thousands of years back, discover the documented science of longevity of life, in other words the subject of 'Ayurveda'. The practitioners of this knowledge, over the centuries, accumulated huge practical experiences on the anatomical-structure of human body in juxtaposition with physiological equilibrium assumed under general principles of nature. They wanted to rationalize their observations and relative perceptions in some conditions of imbalance in the existing inter-relations and arrived at certain generalizations. Thus followed the method of identifications of all ailments or illness flowing from the disturbed equations of the 'tridhatu' that is 'pitta', 'bayu', 'cough'. The ayurvedists also got to evolve both diagnostic (nidana) and therapeutic (panchakarma) measures in an elaborate manner. They were able to typologise or classify the entire range of their discussions of study into eight branches known as 'astanga'. These details have been dealt with by the experts in their respective presentations. They also focussed on the present predicament of this Indian ancient medicinal system facing a great challenge emanating from the modern allopathic treatments.
