It gives me immense pleasure that Hazur Maharaj Ji's [Maharaj Sawan Singh's] book Gurmat Sidhant: 84 Vishyonwala (84 Topics), first published in 1920, is being republished. When I was asked about the reprint, I felt that if a small explanation could be added to each topic, supported by verses from Gurbani, it could help readers better understand the various topics.
Hazur Maharaj Ji had deep devotion for the Adi Granth, and it was his heartfelt desire that people have a clear understanding of its teachings so they could mould their lives accordingly.
The Great Master always emphasized that Gurbani was a price- less treasure-trove of spiritual knowledge and such a valuable inheritance received from the revered Gurus that it should always be venerated. While explaining spiritual matters, the Great Master himself used to quote from Gurbani and used many references from the Gurus' lives. His satsangs and writings contain simple, clear but passionate explanations which have helped to clarify the true message of the Adi Granth in our modern age. Two books, Gurumat Sidhant and Shabd ki Mahima ke Shabd, were specifically written for this purpose.
In the introduction to this book, the Great Master has indicated that the Adi Granth is full of such esoteric spiritual secrets that without a proper understanding, it would not be possible to derive any benefit from it. The Great Master maintains that the essence of the Guru Sahibs' teaching is "true Nam" or "true Shabd" and that the foundation of the Masters' and disciples' lives is the practice of Nam alone.
The message of the saints is universal, not limited to any specific time, place, race or religion. It has always been the same and will remain the same. People from any country, religion or time can benefit from it equally.
The objective of human birth is God-realization, and the path of the saints is the only natural and simple method of achieving this objective. We should also try to mould our lives according to the true teachings of saints and, by contemplating Nam with love and faith, we should merge our soul with the Lord.
