Book Description
Preface
The need of reference books of various types towards carrying on the work of Vedic Research, in a properly equipped manner, has since long been recognized. Thus, Prof. M. Bloomfield wrote, in 1906, in the Preface to his A Vedic Concordance: "I sketched the plan of a three-fold apparatus designed to facilitate and deepen the study of the Vedas: One part of it was a universal word-index to the Vedas; another was an index of subjects and ideas and the third, which I promised to undertake myself, was a Vedic Concordance". While Prof. Bloomfield gave us his said Concordance and Professors A. Macdonell and A. B. Keith jointly laboured on and completed their A Vedic Index our Institute, as is well known, undertook, in 1930, to bring out A Vedic Word-Concordance which it has since completed and issued in 16 Parts, altogether, covering 11000 closely printed pages (1935-65). It is a universal Vocabulary-Register of about 500 Vedic Works with complete textual reference and comparative-cum-critical commentary bearing on phonology, accent, traditional and proto-linguistic etymology, grammar, metre and text-criticism, Prof. Bloomfield's said Concordance arranges, in common alphabetical order, each Pada of every verse as well as each prose-formula, Yajus and Pralşa, occurring in 119 Vedic Texts which were then available. This work is very useful towards finding out places of textual occurrence of the Vedic verses as well as prose-formulas which one might come across while going through various ancient commentaries and other works. It also helps in Vedic text critical and general studies by recording variant readings and giving cross-references to similar contexts. Our Institute also undertook, a few years back, to bring out three Vedic reference-works of yet another type being the Citation-registers (Uddharakoşas) drawing their materials from the three Primary Sections of Vedic literature, ie., (1) the Samhitas, (2) the Brahmaņas including the Aranyakas and (3) the Upanisads. While the compilation of the first of these works, to wit, the Samhita-citations is still in progress, the third work being the Upanisadic citations has been compiled and is now undergoing editorial treatment. The present work represents the completion of the second one of the said three works. It is based on 26 Vedic Texts, as mentioned in the sequel, including (1) the prose-portions (Brahmaņa-bhagas)the available Samhitäs of Krsna-Yajurveda, (2) the Brahmaņas proper and (3) the Aranyakas. About 25000 select text-units (vakyas) have entered into the composition of this work. These Selections have been made on the basis of their importance in the matter of understanding the Vedic Texts, especially, in connection with the data as available therein on (1) general exposition, (2) grammar, etymology and metre (3) deities, (4) ritual, (5) ethics, (6) mythology, (7) philosophy, (8) history, (9) geography and (10) Ayurveda, Dhanurveda, Gandharvaveda and various other ancient sciences and disciplines. Accordingly, the first thing done towards properly editing these selections has been to record note-worthy points of importance of each of them, as separate Head-words, one or more, as the case may be.
