Book Description
About the Book
The Canakya-Saptati to is a collection of 70 worldly maxims said to have been imparted emperor Candragupta by his minister Caņakya, the reputed ethic-philosopher of ancient India. Whatever be the authenticity of this claim, there is no doubt that we have in these maxims gems of worldly wisdom relating to various stages of life and diverse strata of society. Six strands of the Canakya tradition have been identified and critically edited by Dr. Ludwik Sternbach in the Vishveshvaranand Indo-logical Series, as No. 27 and 28. The Canakya-Saptati presented here in a critical edition with a detailed Introduction and Recessional Concordance represents yet another tradition of the Canakya compendia which are re-markable for their popular appeal and pithy common sense.

Foreword
The Canakya-Saptati, which is now being issued as the Volume 32 in our Vishveshvaranand Indological Research Series is an adjunct to the Capkya-Niti-Text-Tradition under publication by our Institute in the same Series as the Volumes 27-29. In the latter work, its learned Editor, Dr. Ludwik Sternbach has made an elaborate analysis and study of Canakya's text-tradition as found recorded in about 75 manuscripts and 150 printed editions and other compendia with a view to determine the original verses by disentangling them from the cobwebs of textual variations and accretions that seem to have replaced or overgrown the same. As a result of his investigations, Dr. Sternbach has identified six distinct strands in the decent of the Canakya tradition and has edited critically the six corresponding versions under the titles: Vrddha-Canakya textus ornatior, Viddha-Canakya textus simplifier, Canakya-niti-šastra, Canakya-sara-sangraha, Laghu-Canakya and Canakya-raja-niti-Sastra. The Canakya-Saptati, edited here on the basis of an old palm-leaf manuscript preserved in this Institute, shows some new variations and, as such, is expected to be useful in the determination of the Ur-Text which is now being reconstructed by Dr. Sternbach. It gives me pleasure to record here my appreciation of the work done in this behalf by Shri K. V. Sarma of our Institute who has edited this text and supplied it with a critical Introduction and a Table of Recessional Concordance showing the similarities and differences between this work and the above-said six versions which have been edited by Dr. Sternbach. Our Publication Department and our V. V. R. Institute Press also deserve my thanks for the care they have taken in bringing out this volume in proper form.

Introduction
The edificatory sayings of Canakya have enjoyed, in India, down the ages, such high celebrity that they occupy an important place in the rich didactic literature in Sanskrit. The halo that encircled the ethico-philosopher that Canakya was, have endowed his sayings with much popular appeal but have had, at the same time, the adverse effect of numerous apo-cryphal verses being fathered on him. Thus, the manuscripts of Canakya's compendia now available vary from one another to a considerable extent. In his recently published Canakya-Niti-Text-Tradition (Vishveshvaranand Indological Series, Nos, 27 and 28, 1963-1964) Dr. Ludwik Sternbach has made an elaborate and analytical examination of about 75 manuscripts and 150 editions of Canakya's compendia with a view to disentangle the genuine Caņakya verses from the cobwebs of textual variations and accretions and to systematise the Canakya tradition into definite recensions- Dismissing the generally accepted view put forward by Oscar Kressler that the Canakya compendia has come down in 17 versions, Sternbach observes: "A careful study, however, of all the MSs and editions of Canakya's compendia which are available now. dispels the myth of the seventeen versions. All the known Caņakya's compendia can be divided into no more than six versions. These six versions can be called as follows: the Vyddha-Canakya, textus ornatior, the Vyddha-Caņakya, textus simplicior, the Capakya-niti-lastra, the Canakya-sara-sangraha, Laghu-Canakya and the Canakya-raja-mati-śastra." (VIS 27, Intro.. p. ix).
