Padmasri Satya Narayana Rajaguru, an erudite scholar and a great epigraphist has contributed immensely to the history and culture of Odisha. He was wellversed in Odia, Sanskrit, Telegu, Tamil and Hindi Languages. His contributions to the Odishan historiography are immense and significant from both qualitative and quantative points of view. For the organization of the Odisha State Museum, his contributions is also significant. This book highlights the life and achievements of the great personality.
Dr. Jayanti Rath obtained her master's degree in History (1981), M. Phil and P.hd from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. She is a connoisseur of art and also a noted literary personality of the State of Odisha.
At present, She is holding the post of Superintendent, Odisha State Museum and Secretary, Odisha Sahitya Akademi. She is not only a capable administrator but also a sedulous researcher. A number of articles written by her have been published in different Journal both in India and abroad. She has represented the country in SAARC conference at Srilanka in 2015. She has also received a number of prestigious awards for her literary contributions including the State Sahitya Akademi Award in 1995.
Among the historians who had enriched the history of Odisha through their pioneering works, particularly in the post-independence era, Satya Narayana Rajaguru occupies a prominent place. Basically he was an epigraphist, but his vast area of interest covered different aspects of Odishan history. He had gone deep to the original source materials to find out the unknown past. His interpretation on some intricate issues in history has been based on solid foundation. He had tried to solve the controversial problems linked with the history of Odisha. In Odia language, he had written historical plays, research articles and traditional history books. In Sanskrit and Telugu languages, he had also published research articles. He had reached at the pinnacle of glory when he was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1974.
Sri S. N. Rajaguru was born in Paralakhemundi on 19th August, 1903. His father was Pandit Harekrushna Rajaguru and mother was Sunamani Devi. When he was young, he could read the writings of Hunter on Odisha. He was interested in studying the inscriptions found in the temples of Mukhalingam, Simhachalam. In 1950, he joined in Odisha State Museum where he remained in charge of the Epigraphy section. As the Curator of Odisha State Museum, he made a commendable contribution for publishing five volumes of "Inscriptions of Orissa". Before the publication of the volumes on the inscriptions, he was interested in carrying out research on the dynasty of Gangas which resulted in the publication of "The Gangas of Kalinga" in two volumes in 1932. These two volumes show his keen interest and deep research in examining the original history of a noted dynasty ie the Gangas. After retirement, he joined in Sri Jagannath Sanskrit University, Puri to decipher mainly the inscriptions found in the Nrusimha temple, Markandesvar temple, Patalesvara temple and other monuments inside the Jagannath temple complex. After a long period of research, the monumental work "Inscriptions of the Temple of Purn and Origin of Sri Purusottama Jagannath" was published in two volumes by Sri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya in 1992 and 2003 respectively. Before the publication of its 2nd volume he had passed away in 1997. By deciphering the inscriptions here, he could bring into light certain new facts. Along with the study of the inscriptions, he focused on Purushottama Kshetra, builder of Nrusimha temple, the impact of Srivaishnavism, Jayadeva, Mathas of Puri and car festival of Lord Jagannath. On the historical writings of Dr. S.N.Rajaguru, no extensive work has yet been done by the scholars.
