Book Description
Back of the Book
Whether it is the narrow lanes of Old Delhi, Partition and the dramatic days that followed, the river Yamuna in flood, the Delhi railway station or college life at Delhi University, Delhi: Light, Shades, Shadows captures the spirit of the capital city of India. This book presents the observations of a professor-cum-photographer who was drawn by the enchanting structures of Delhi for over five decades. Indeed, Dhruva N Chaudhuri has seen Delhi from close quarters. Son of the famous 'Unknown Indian', the late Nirad C Chaudhuri, Dhruva presents Delhi's history in a vivid and natural way. Delhi: Light, Shades, Shadows holds an academic interest as its contents cover the monuments of Delhi. It also stands apart as a narrative of the changing social fabric and landscape of the heart of India. Here is a book that will prove to be nostalgic for some and absolutely fascinating for others. The photographs, legends and text combine to tell the story of a Delhi that was.

About the Book
The Delhi that was Few people are better equipped to write about the dramatic change in Delhi's character than Dhruv Chaudhuri, son of Nirad C.Chaudhuri. He came to Delhi in 1942, when his father rented a flat near Mori Gate. He never went to school, but learnt everything from his distinguished father. He took up photography as his profession, starting with a box camera before going in for more sophisticated instruments. He has recorded his impressions of the Delhi that was with beautiful photographs and lucidly written text in Delhi: Light, Shades, Shadows. I recommend this pictorial biograpiry of the Delhi that was and what became to all lovers of the city.

Foreword
Those of us who were in Delhi in the 1940s and '50s tiresomely remind younger people that the city used to be unbelievably beautiful and serene. The skies were clear and one could saunter across wide roads. There was almost no means of public transport, but there were hundreds of bicycles and you could always walk down the pavements. The River Yamuna was in flood after every monsoon, and winter meant dew-drenched grass and the intoxicating fragrance of sweet peas. If you drove out to the rural fringe, you inhaled the smell of cauliflower near Moolchand Hospital and sarson-ka-saag near Chirag Dilli. Summer meant dark afternoons and the dramatic loo' which swept across, leaving the evenings deliciously cool. And the joy of sleeping out on charpois under the starry skies. The famous Number 9 bus took students from Moti Bagh to Delhi University, and by the time it reached Mandi House it was swaying dangerously. Kashmere Gate had two arches, through which our little bus took us, past the sweep of green which was Qudsia Bagh, past the turreted Ludlow Castle, on to Indraprastha College and, skirting the Ridge, to the University, a soothing green and quiet oasis. North Delhi is Dhruva Chaudhuri territory. From his flat on Nicholson Road, near Mori Gate, he and his brothers and friends walked, cycled or took buses up the Ridge, to Chandni Chowk, the Secretariat, to the far-off monuments. Many of us feel a shock of recognition in reading his account. But few of us would have his special talents-the vivid visual quality which only a gifted photographer can have; the tongue-in-cheek humour of a person who never grows old; the sense of loss or anguish which comes from a generous empathy.
