Mohapatra Nilamoni Sahoo, the original writer, is an acknowledged master of Odia fiction. His stories reveal his deeper understanding of life that all along animates his creative energy. The characters in his fictions, essentially drawn from his own surroundings, are immersed in their struggle for existence. He has a unique style of his own which strikes an immediate chord with the readers. At times, his way of storytelling startles the readers as something extraordinary. It is needless to say, his maturity of vision combines well with his craftsmanship in establishing a rapport with the readers.
The translator Supriya Kar has gone deep into the source of the text language. She has shown remarkable skill in rendering them into the target language. All I would say she has the capacity to build a harmony between Odia and a foreign language. Odisha Sahitya Akademi would feel amply rewarded, if english readers find something interesting in the translated volume of The Fallen Gandharva and Other Stories.
