Preface

Manipur is a land of beauty and talent. Author visited many time and for more than a year he even resided. Every time he visited the land and the people enchanted him. His first visit was sometime early 1984 and there after there were many. The craft, the herbal system, the games and acrobatics all enchanted him.

The ancient name of the land was Meithei Leipak or the land of Meitheis or Sna Leipak or golden land. Even in ancient Indian scriptures it was mentioned as Subarna Bhu or golden land.

The state is known now for wrong reasons. But right background was hardly highlighted. Very rarely it is known that the Game of Polo was invented in Manipur and was officially adopted by the British Army during 1911. In fact the game of hockey and rugby existed in Manipur since ancient days. Today even in case of modern games like soccer or hockey or weight lifting or gymnastics it is the people of Manipur that keep India's flag high in International arena.

Author is thankful to his friends from Manipur like H. Manikumar, late L. Saratchandra, late Th. Kulachandra and the wonderful couple L. Anand and Premtala for providing references and information otherwise it would not have been possible for the author to complete the book.

Author hopes the state will be known for right reason in future.
