Through the observance of some of the very significant earmarked days in healthcare, we can help people to be more informed participants in their healthcare and wellness. This is the main reason behind this handbook that has just been released. This booklet is an inspiration of Fr. John Thekkekara, the Associate Director of the Hospital, along with a team of enthusiastic students of the 2023 batch of Master of Hospital Administration at St. John's Medical College, Bangalore.
The author has more than 20 years of experience in the field of Hospital Administration and holds PhD in Health Systems Management from TISS, Mumbai. He visited several mission hospitals across India and has studied their history and challenges. Currently he is serving as professor and research guide in the department of Hospital Administration and Associate Director of St. John's Medical College Hospital, Bangalore.
We know that most of the miracles done by Jesus Christ are related to healing and health. And His disciples continued this ministry for the sick in their days. And today we continue this healing ministry.
Healthcare is a major apostolate in the Church. Healthcare is a very complex ministry which covers a wide variery of issues which are individualistic, social, and communitarian in nature. Awareness about many of the common sicknesses and major health issues has not reached a considerable share of the Indian populace.

A long existing vacuum in Indian healthcare is bridged through this small work which covers more than forty important days in healthcare, their importance explained, and some activities suggested, to help plan for the day. The inclusion of appropriate Bible passages and a small prayer makes this work a good handbook for all healthcare workers to keep in their possession and use when needed.
It is a great joy for me to be associated with this work and appreciate the effort taken by the students which is very commendable. I am happy to present this booklet for use by the healthcare workers.
The importance and promotion of healthcare extends beyond hospitals and professionals; the community plays a crucial role. There's a saying that goes ""people's health is in people's hands."" Even with top-notch facilities, if individuals lack awareness about health issues, healthy living, disease prevention, and essential healthcare practices, it will be difficult to achieve good health at a community level.
Observing important health days promotes awareness, shares scientific knowledge, and encourages community involvement for better health outcomes. Activities on these days can inspire the younger generations to contribute to a healthier society. A guidebook tailored for the Indian healthcare context has long been needed.
Inspired by the work of my brother in Christian Connections for International Health (CCIH) Dr. Mwai Makoka, my students from the Masters in Hospital Administration program at St. John's Medical College, Bangalore (MHA Batch of 2023), took on the challenging task of creating a handbook on health days tailored for India with a Christian touch. Their collective effort made this possible in a short time.
We identified some significant health days relevant to India, providing a brief introduction to each day's importance, key objectives, and a suggested list of activities. We also included passages from the Holy Bible for prayer services and a small prayer for each day.
We are grateful to His Excellency Most Rev. Lumen Monteiro, Bishop of Agartala and Chairman of the CBCI office for Health care, for blessing this work with his foreword. Special thanks to Rev. Fr. Santhosh Ivan Dias, Secretary of the CBCI Office for Health care.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Rev. Fr. Jesudoss Rajamanickam (Director, St. John's National Academy of Health Sciences), Rev. Dr. James Charles Davis (Associate Director of St. John's Medical College), Dr. George D'Souza (Dean, SJMC), and Dr. Mary Dias (Vice Dean, Allied Health Sciences) for their support. We also thank Prof. Sara Mathew (HOD of Hospital Administration) and my colleagues-Mrs. Supreetha Lobo, Mrs. Priyanka Chowdhury, Mrs. Janet Sweety, Dr. Anitta Jose, Fr. Reginald Pinto, Fr. Sabu Nedunilath, Mrs. Sabrina Besterwich, and Mr. Vijay Ladha-for their encouragement.
Christian World Imprints is the printer and publisher of this handbook. I am grateful for their quality work and timely responses. They are really amazing people to work with.
We hope this modest guide enhances the meaningful observation of health days in Indian healthcare organizations and communities, especially within the Christian healthcare network.
