About The Book

The Rishis of Himalayas meditated deeply on the "Supreme Secret" of creation the Origin of Creation, the birth of Man and aim of Human life.

Their Vision illuminated by God, revealed to them the Supreme Message of God to Man. They called this 'VEDA' the Eternal Knowledge. This was transmitted to all humans by the selfless efforts of the Sages Seers and Rishis. This is called "Sanathana Dharma" or Eternal Wisdom, which is Timeless!

This gave the world "HINDUISM" in course of centuries. Slowly, all the other Re- ligions were born - Zorastrianism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam etc. with soon spread rapidly all over the world.

Nowhere in India or the World do we have a University or College for teaching Vedic Hinduism in a scientific way, to our younger generation. Guru Dev Dr. Vedavyas IAS Ph.D., has published the first ever Text book on Vedic Hinduism meant for Gradu- ate Degree called "HINDUISM IN THE SPACE AGE". It was a best seller at the World Parliament of Religions at Chicago, U.S.A. held 100 years after Swami Vivekananda where Dr. Vedavyas spoke on the "Message of Vedic Rishis for the Space Age".

Now the Proposal for Starting this University of Vedic Sciences called "Vedavyasa Bharathi Gurukula Vishwa Vidyalaya", is proposed to the U.G.C. This will also offer Education in Ayurveda, Yoga, Astrology, Vastu, Mantra Sastra, Agama & Yagnas as part of Vedic Hinduism at the Graduate level.

Preface

Many a foreign visitor to India, on landing, puts this familiar question "What is Hinduism?"

Often he gets no answer. The reason is that many Indians are themselves foreigners! They are more ignorant than most Western scholars of what Hinduism is? This has been the experience of many foreign visitors. Infact it was my experience also. Often one comes across faceless Hindus. They dress, they talk, and behave as aliens to Hindu Cultlure. This may be the effect of Lord Macaulay's malicious system of "Educating the Hindu out of the Indian" to make him a well-dressed barbarian, who has neither the virtues of Western tradition and its discipline, nor that of his own land 'India', of his own forefathers, the "Hindus".

Whatever be the reasons to justify such a shameful state of affairs in our country, one fact standsout prominently. Such "Hindus" only serve one purpose. They are a constant source of disappointment to foreigners, interested in knowing more of Hinduism, which, as we find in the Western world today, is gaining, more and more attention of the enlightened public of other nations. Many find that whenever they approach such "Hindus" with the above question they draw from them nothing but ignorance, if not something worse.

Foreword

"What is Hinduism" ?

Not long ago people used to say that this was a question more easily asked than answered. It was thought that Hinduism was a vague, confused medley with no established canon, no recognized creed and no definite doctrine. No doubt Hinduism is, as Dr. Radhakrishnan says, "a process not a result, a growing tradition not a fixed revelation", but there are certain basic principles underlying the whole process, certain ideals to which the tradition has been loyal throughout its long history of many thousand years.

It is these principles and ideals that the Author had tried to elucidate in this Book. He has given a valuable account of the essentials of a Religion which, though perhaps the oldest in the world, is as vigorous today as any other religion and indeed has proved more easily adaptable to the demands of this nuclear age.

An attempt has been made to show that Hinduism is neither fatalism nor pessimism, neither asceticism nor quietism, neither illusionism nor polytheism, as some of its hasty critics have represented it to be. It is a Synthesis of all types of religious experience, from the lowest to the very highest, a whole and complete view of life. That is why it has stood for thousands of years and survived all assaults and attacks upon it.

Today, Hinduism is again in one of its periods of renaissance, which began in the middle of the nineteenth century.
