On 20 January 1965, the Bihar Research Society completed 50 years of its service to Oriental scholarship and learning. Among the measures undertaken by the Society, since its inception, to promote research, was establishing a research journal of its own, viz. the Journal of the Bihar and Orissa Research Society which, subsequently, in 1943, was styled as the Journal of the Bihar Research Society. Durning this period of half a century, the Society brought out 47 volumes and one special volume devoted to the Mahaparinirvāņa celebrations of 1956-57, or 22250 pages of printed matter. Successive editors have maintained a high standard of publication; and the Journal has enjoyed an Inter- national reputation. On behalf of the Society, I take this opportunity to express our deep sense of gratitued to all contributors to the Journal, without whose co-operation based on a zeal for knowledge and research, this result could not have been achieved.
