Introduction
Yoga is a Sanskrit word which literally means union, contact and connection' i.e., spiritual union of the individual soul with the universal soul and is expressed here as per the vedäntic context. Just as camphor melts and becomes one with the fire, or as a drop of water when it is thrown into the Ocean, becomes one with the Ocean, the individual soul, when it is purified, when it is free from lust, greed, hated or egoism. When it becomes Satwika, becomes one with the Supreme soul. The Gitä defines yoga as that state in which, there is nothing higher or worth realizing, and one is firmly rooted, in which a person is never shaken, even by the greatest pain. That divine state, which is free from all the pains and miseries are known as yoga. According to Patanjali, yoga does not mean union, but spiritual effort to attain perfection through control of the body, mind and senses through the right discrimination between Purusha and Prakriti. Prakriti needs Purusha in order to be known, to be seen, to be enjoyed; and Purusha needs Prakriti in order to enjoy and also in order to obtain liberation, in order to discriminate between himself and Prakriti and thereby obtain emancipation. On the context of lifestyle, Swami Sivananda says that Yoga is an art of right living. Yoga is a perfect practical system of self-culture. Yoga is an exact science. It aims at the harmonious development of the body, the mind and the soul. Yoga is the turning away of the senses from the objective universe and the concentration of the mind within. Yoga is eternal life in the soul or spirit. Yoga aims at controlling the mind and its modifications. The path of Yoga is an inner path whose gateway is the heart, Yoga is the path of perfection and perfection is not limited to spiritual life alones of the consciousness, Yoga is defined as the cessation of the Yoga is the blocking of the rising patterns in all the dimension modifications of the chitta (Yoga Sutra-1.2). What is yoga? Yoga is a form of discipline. What kind of discipline? It is the control of the modifications of the mind. So first a certain spiritual disciplined should be formulated, which is both external and internal, in order to overcome these fluctuating tendencies of the mind. Until integration and purification has taken place, the system of yoga is incomplete.* Here, in this regard, let us explain and analyze as Yoga is the discipline of the mind, senses and physical body. Yoga helps in the co-ordination and control of the subtle forces within the body. Yoga brings in perfection, peace and everlasting happiness. Yoga can help us in our business and in our daily life. We can have calmness of mind at all times by the practice of Yoga. We can have restful sleep. We can have increased energy, vigor, vitality, longevity and a high standard of health. Yoga transmutes animal nature into divine nature and raises us to the pinnacle of divine glory and splendor. The practice of Yoga will help to control the emotions and passions and will give power to resist temptations and to remove the disturbing elements from the mind. It will enable to keep a balanced mind always and remove fatigue. It will confer serenity, calmness and wonderful concentration. It will enable to hold communion with the Lord and thus attain the sum mum bonum of existence. Yoga is primarily a process of self-culture. Its aim is the attainment of spiritual perfection or Self-realization. The process of Yoga pertains to the control of the physical organs, the breath, the mind and the senses. Practice of Yoga bestows a rich and full life. It is, in fact, the science of living a pure and healthy life. Practice of self-restraint, mental equipoise, truthfulness, compassion, purity and selflessness constitutes the process of Yoga. Practice of Āsana, Prānāyāma, Bandha and Mudra also constitutes the process of Yoga. The term 'yoga' comes from the root 'yuj', which means 'to join". In its spiritual sense, it is the process by which the identity of the individual soul and the supreme soul is realized by the yogi. Yoga means union with the lord. This is the goal of human life. It is the be-all and end-all of human existence. Yoga means addition. When the restless individual soul is added to the supreme soul, it finds eternal rest and supreme satisfaction. The word yoga is also applicable in a secondary sense to all those factors that go to constitute yoga, that are conducive to the final achievement or fulfillment of yoga and as such indirectly lead to final freedom or perfection. A yogi is one who has reached the highest estate of Samādhi. One who is attempting to get perfection in yoga is also called yogi. The first object of life in yoga is to get over body-consciousness.Yoga the science that teaches the method of joining the human spirit with god. It is the divine science, which disentangles the jiva from the phenomenal world of sense objects and links him with the absolute, whose inherent attributes are infinite knowledge, unbroken joy and an eternal life. It is the science of sciences, which helps the aspirant to attain self-realization. Patanjali Maharshi, the exponent of the Raja yoga system, is the master scientist. Western Philosophers-Pythagoras, Plato, Emerson, Schopenhauer, Spinoza, Descartes, Max Muller and Paul Deussen-have eulogized the science of yoga very highly. Yoga is spiritual or divine life. The yoga system believes in a personal God and pays much importance to revelation. It teaches how to live in union with God. Life in God brings eternal bliss. To live in God to commune with God is yoga. God is an ocean of bliss. Those who forget God undergo suffering, troubles, miseries and tribulations. Yogic living implies discriminative living. Yoga is equanimity, equipoise and equilibrium. It is skill in the performance of actions. Yoga is disconnection from the union with pain and freedom from attachment and desires.
