About the Book

India is made up of people from sev- eral faiths, and the gulfs between them are substantial, including dietary customs and prohibitions. There are various reli- gions and cusstoms in northern India. The Hindus and Sikhs will not eat beef; the orthodox Hindus and Jains avoid onion and garlic, considered "passion-induc- ing"; the Parsis, who came to India in the seventh century from Persia, gave up eat- ing beef as a gesturre of thanks to the Hindu ruler who gave them asylum; and the Muslims and Jews abstain from pork but relish beef, the meat of sheep, and chicken.

Preface

There is no bigger complicated social phenomenon than Religions of Northern India. It has intrigued the foreigners as well as Indians alike. That is why researchers and consequent books keep on coming on the subject. Northern India is a loosely defined region in the northern part of India. The exact meaning of the term varies by usage. The dominant geographical features of Northern India are the Indo-Gangetic Plain and the Himalayas, which demarcate the region from Tibet and Central Asia. Northern India has been the historical center of the Maurya, Gupta, Maratha, Mughal and British Indian Empires. It has a diverse culture, and includes the Hindu pilgrimage centers of Char Dham, Haridwar and Varanasi, the Buddhist Mahabodhi Temple and the Muslim pilgrimage destination of Ajmer, as well as world heritage sites such as the Valley of flowers, Khajuraho, Bhimbetka Caves, Qutb Minar and the Taj Mahal.
