Book Description
About the Book
Sacred Thread offers a visual and three-language presentation of Patanjali's Yoga sutra. These 196 short sentences form the foundation for the philosophy and practice of Yoga. One of six ways of viewing the world, this Darsana emphasizes human potential. Acknowledging the troubles caused by ignorance, egotism, addiction, and negativity, Yoga urges the cultivation of opposites: gentle behavior (ahirhsa), truth-telling (satya), honesty (asteya), sexual restraint (brahmacarya) and avoidance of consumerism (aparigraha), Combined with practices of body, breath, and meditation, Yoga brings understanding and freedom. Working with the original Sanskrit text, the book renders photographic images to understand Yoga philosophy along with translation and explanation in English as well as Hindi. Without a syllable to spare, the Sanskrit text encapsulates the meaning of life and the possibility of freedom in four chapters: Samadhi, Sadhana, Powers, and Freedom. The daily street life of India places the entire spectrum of Patanjali's wisdom on display. The authors have chosen from thousands of images to match Patañjali's glimpses of reality with what can readily be seen in Pune or Varanasi or Delhi. The English translation seeks to convey Patanjali's concision without adding too much explanation. The process of Yoga requires the quieting of thoughts. By letting the words stand on their own, a sense of connection emerges, conveying the thread of Yoga wisdom. Yoga is now studied and practiced in more than four dozen universities throughout India. The Hindi translation provides yet another bridge for comp-rehending the wisdom of Yoga. This book will be useful for the many people training to be experts in Yoga.

Preface
PATANJALI'S YOGASUTRA has long inspired students of Yoga on their quest for self-understanding. Hundreds of different translations of the text have been published in many languages. At Yoga Anand Ashram in Amityville, New York, a group of a half dozen Yoga students, many of whom were engaged in the study of Sanskrit at Stony Brook, Fordham, and Columbia universities, convened on Wednesday nights for seven years, poring over the original text, its primary commentaries, and various available translations from 1979 to 1986. The results, including a grammatical analysis and translation, were published first by Sri Satguru Publications of the Indian Books Centre in Delhi in 1990, and later in Yoga and the Luminous: Patañjali's Spiritual Path to Freedom (State University of New York Press, 2008). In the early 2010s, at the rise of Thursday morning meditation with Trudy Goodman, Chris Chapple, Beth Sternlieb, and Cris Antunes spent two years reviewing the text and discussing its meaning in light of practice. They also matched photographs taken by Ben Marshall in India with the text.
