Book Description
Preface

The present Book embodies the result of our field explorations carried out in the district Bargarh from 2010 to 2015. As a result, a considerable number of Prehistoric belonging to sites were identified have been of the Acheulian phase of the Lower Palaeolithic culture. About 23 localities yielding Acheulian assemblages brought to light in the Jira river valley, a tributary of the Mahanadi river.

It may be noted that most of the sites documented in this arca are in a semi-primary context with little evidence for much post-depositional displacements. The artefacts seem to belong to different cultural phases namely, Acheulian, Middle Palaeolithic and Microlithic. Though these are found in mixed conditions yet the choice of raw material, state of preservation and morphological differences indicate their relative chronological order. The artefacts were collected and analysed but the focus of the present work is on Acheulian artefacts. These are distinctly defined according to their large size, the raw material (mostly quartzite) and typical techno-typological characteristic features.

The Bargarh district was distinctly selected for two reasons:

Firstly, It was V. Ball in the late nineteenth century who for the first time reported four Palaeoliths in different parts of Orissa including the Sambalpur district. These findings inspired scholars much later to (1940s) explore the area. Thereafter, the exploration conducted by several scholars from time to time in the adjoining areas Chhotanagpur region including Ranchi and Singhbhum districts of Jharkhand, Raigarh of Madhya Pradesh, Sirpur of Chhattisgarh have resulted in the discovery of a large number of Prehistoric sites of various phases, which indicates towards the potentiality of Prehistoric cultures of the region. The first excavated Lower Palaedithic site Kuliana District Mayurbhanj by Bose and Sen in 1939 triggered the interest of scholars. The next step was the explorations carried out by G.C Mohapatra in the early sixties of the last century in different parts of Orissa which included Sundargarh, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts resulted in a good number of sites related to different Prehistoric periods.

The archacologists hike 11 C Sharma, Hasa, Ota, Mohanty, Khilar, AK Ghosh, Dasgupta, Tripathi, Dash, Rath, Chakrabarti, Biswal, Kar, Ray, Behera and many others were the first to add new informations to the Prehistoric field of Orissa. These explorations brought to light the possibilities of getting more Prehistoric sites in hitherto unexplored areas. Hence the discovery of Daridungri (District Sambalpur) and Dharokusum (District Bargarh) substantiated the possibility of hidden shreds of evidence in Bargarh District too. The Jira valley was selected To locate sites in Primary-semi primary contexts with a marked emphasis on their dispersal pattern, techno-typological character, raw material source exploitation, man-land relation and tool production activities etc.

Secondly, The reason to select this region for exploration was its potential geographical location. While it is bounded on all sides by several archaeologically potential regions ie, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, its perennial and seasonal water streams, rich forests, valleys and hills with plenty of suitable raw material for artefact production which might have provided an ideal environment for Prehistoric habitation.

1. However, before discussing the chapters in brief, it is more apt to accept the limitations of our research work. The entire material has been collected from the surface except for two sites viz. Badpadar and Torajunga which were subjected to trial trenches in two season to ascertain the stratigraphical context of surface scatters though a few flakes and a handaxe from one of the trenches. Nothing could be found from the trenches of Barpadar (BDP). However, the position of the Acheulian in stratigraphy could be well ascertained.

2. At the same time, in the absence of scientific dates, no time bracket could be provided to the industries neither contemporary Palaco-environmental understanding could be developed except for general remarks which are made wherever and whenever necessary. However, relative dating could be attempted based on similarity with other Acheulian sites.

3. Also, soil and rock analysis could have helped in giving more authentic results on Palaeo-environment and soil formation processes, but due to time and financial limitations, these could not be possible.

Based on the study of material remains recovered from the sites, the present dissertation has been divided into six chapters.
