Pichwai (पिछे back, वई- hanging) is a style of painting that emerged out of the Seva-Vidhi (acts of service) of the Pushtimargis, a sect whose tutelary deity is a young, seven-year-old Krishna, who resides in the Haveli of Nathdwara, endearingly called Srinathji or Thakurji. Beginning as a mode of painting meant to adorn the walls of Srinathji’s Haveli, Pichwais transformed into sacred symbols to be taken home by the devotee who wanted to experience eternal proximity to Srinathji. Created as a visual narration of Sri-Krishna Lilas, using paint, embroidery, and applique work, in the rich idioms of Kota-Bundi, Deccan and Kishangarh schools, the aesthetic of Pichwai which allows the devotee a personal bond with Thakurji is unparalleled.
