Krishna And The Kadamba Tree

Krishna And The Kadamba Tree

Krishna And The Kadamba Tree

The kadamba tree is indispensable to the iconography of Lord Krishna as much as Radha is to His happiness. No wonder that most Madhubani paintings, India’s best-loved folk art technique developed in the Mithila region of Bihar, feature Lord Krishna playing His flute under the kadamba tree and/or for the pleasure of His beloved Radha. The painting that you see on this page is no exception to this tradition. It depicts the lovers on either side of the stem of a richly-canopied kadamba, which occupies half the surface area of the handmade paper canvas.

It is a lively, luxuriant canopy. Slender leaves of silver against a solid scarlet backdrop. Black and white branches curving delicately through the colour. Numerous peacocks are seen to be roosting in those branches, filling the air with their sweet sounds, which blend into the divine strains of Krishna’s flute. He is looking straight into Her eyes as He plays the flute, seeking in her His inspiration and fulfillment. She, in all Her beauty, reciprocates, holding up to Him a freshly blooming lotus that she has plucked for Him. Note the peacock at her feet and the seated cow at His.
