Krishna was physically irresistibly appealing. Ancient texts dwell at length on his exceptionally alluring countenance: a blue complexion soft like the monsoon cloud, shining locks of black hair framing a beautifully chiselled face, large lotus like eyes, wild -flower garlands around his neck, a yellow garment (pitambara) draped around his body, a crown of peacock feathers on his head, and a smile playing on his lips, it is in this manner that he is faithfully represented since the ancient times to the modern.

This painting illustrates the following verse:

O anxious one, abandon fear, imagining
me devoted to other women,
You alone entirely occupy my heart
with your voluptuous breasts and hips. None other than the god of love-
the bodiless one, is blessed
to enter my heart.
O my beloved, be content in this
and allow me to embrace you.

Gitagovinda.

The Sanskrit classic, Gitagovinda (Songs of Govinda) was written by Jayadeva in the twelfth century AD. Apart from its intrinsic literary merit, which is of an exceptionally high order, the Gitagovinda is of special importance for its path-breaking deification of the love of Radha and Krishna.
