According to the
romantic and vividly emotional tales of Shakuntala, enraged by the
preoccupation of her with the thoughts of Dushyant, sage Durvasa cursed her to
be forgotten by her husband, similar to the manner in which she had forgotten
her duties towards a guest. As the time passed, Durvasa’s words came true and
saddened by the pain of separation; Shakuntala attempted at making Dushyant
remember the love that he had forgotten. One of the ways in which the heroine
of Kalidas approached her beloved is through a love letter. It is this episode
from the story, which was masterfully brought to the canvas by the legendary
modern Indian painter, Raja Ravi Varma.
A
reproduction of Ravi Varma’s “Shakuntala Patra Lekhan” (Writing of a Letter by
Shakuntala), this oil on canvas depicts Shakuntala surrounded by two of her
confidants, Anasuya and Priyamvada, holding a lotus leaf, lost in her search
for the right verse to be etched on the surface of the leaf. The sky in the
background is painted orange- the misty white of the clouds mixed with the
fiery rays of the sun creating a fitting backdrop for the inner tumults of
Shakuntala. She is dressed in the attire
of the residents of forest, in a saffron sari and ornaments made from the
wildflowers and rosary beads. A wicker basket full of blossoms is placed near
her.
There
is a warming sense of companionship visible between Shakuntala and her friends
whose loving presence enwrapping her seem to be the only solace for the
troubled mind of the daughter of Menaka and Vishwamitra.
Confident
strokes of brush against the canvas have successfully recreated the magic that
was woven by Raja Ravi Varma in his “Shakuntala Patra Lekhan”- a classic from
the collections of popular Indian paintings to brighten up your home.
