The vitarka mudra is of great importance in Buddhist iconography. The enlightened one sits in a stable padmasana and raises the right hand in the stance of dispensing vidya (awareness). This is called vitarka in Sanskrt; while ‘mudra’ refers to the stance of the hands in particular.

As you could see in the murti on this page, the forefinger curves forward to touch the tips with the thumb, and the remaining fingers as well as the palm of the hand remain outstretched. Such a mudra adds to the stability, serenity, and equanimity associated with Gautama Buddha.

He is in the perfect, prolonged padmasana, with the almsbowl in His left hand and deep, seedless samadhi (yogic contemplation) writ large over His handsome brow. As such, the erstwhile Shakyamuni is the very picture of sattvaguna (the stability attribute of all things).

The glistening colour of molten gold adds to the aesthetic appeal of this pure brass murti. From the hems of His raiment spread beneath Him to the embroidered sections along its silken lengths, the sheer proportion of detail makes this work of art an investment buy.

A Beacon of Wisdom and Assurance

This exquisite brass sculpture captures the serene and enlightened presence of the Buddha, specifically depicting him in the Vitarka Mudra. The Vitarka Mudra, characterized by the right hand raised with palm facing outwards and fingers pointing upwards, signifies the gesture of teaching, discussion, and the transmission of knowledge. It is a powerful symbol of wisdom, intellectual debate, and the dispelling of doubt, mirroring the Buddha's role as the ultimate teacher who illuminated the path to enlightenment for all beings. Crafted from high-quality brass, this statue possesses a lustrous sheen that speaks of its durability and timeless appeal. The metal lends a substantial weight and a warm, inviting glow, making it a captivating focal point for any sacred space or contemplative corner. The meticulous detailing showcases the artistry of its creation, from the finely etched folds of the Buddha's robe to the serene expression on his face, which seems to radiate an inner peace and profound understanding. The intricate patterns adorning his garments and the gentle curve of his lips invite contemplation, encouraging a moment of pause and reflection in our busy lives. In Buddhist traditions, the Buddha is revered not just as a spiritual leader but as an embodiment of compassion, detachment, and the ultimate understanding of the human condition. The stories surrounding his life are filled with instances where he used his wisdom and teachings to guide individuals towards liberation from suffering. The Vitarka Mudra, in particular, is often associated with the Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath, where he set in motion the Wheel of Dharma, sharing his profound insights with the world. This gesture, therefore, represents the active dissemination of truth and the encouragement of ethical living. The practice of placing Buddha images in homes or temples is a way to invite these qualities into one's environment. This brass statue, with its commanding yet tranquil posture, serves as a constant reminder of the principles of mindfulness, compassion, and the pursuit of inner peace. Its presence can inspire practitioners to engage in virtuous actions, to seek knowledge, and to approach life's challenges with equanimity.

Artistry and Symbolism in Brass

The choice of brass for this sculpture is significant. Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been used for centuries in the creation of sacred art due to its malleability, its ability to hold intricate detail, and its enduring nature. In many cultures, brass is considered a sacred metal, believed to possess auspicious qualities and to ward off negative energies. The skilled artisans who forged this piece have harnessed the properties of brass to bring forth a divine representation that is both aesthetically pleasing and spiritually resonant. The lustrous finish enhances the divine aura of the Buddha, making him appear as if bathed in celestial light. The base of the statue, with its decorative patterns, further accentuates the Buddha's regal and dignified presence, providing a stable foundation for his enlightened teachings. This piece is more than just a decorative object; it is a tangible link to a rich spiritual heritage and a source of inspiration for those who seek wisdom and tranquility.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
