"Perumal"- the mighty Lord, is an epithet of Sri Vishnu, which underlines the immeasurable powers of the protector god in the Hindu cosmos. In this Panchaloha statue set from Swamimalai, Perumal with his twin Shakti- Sridevi, and Bhudevi enlivens the atmosphere with his celestial aura.

Vishnu stands in the center, in the Chatrubhuja roopa, while the Devis flank him, complimenting the brilliance of his form with their heavenly lithesome roopa. The statue of Sridevi and Bhudevi measures slightly less in height than Perumal- the traditional artist's way of conveying the primacy of Vishnu in this trio, who is the Swami or Lord of abundance embodied by Sri and Bhu and all living beings that populate the earth.

The Divine Trinity: Lord Vishnu and His Consorts

This exquisite set of Panchaloha bronze statues depicts Lord Vishnu, also known as Perumal, flanked by his divine consorts, Sridevi and Bhudevi. Crafted using the ancient Madhuchista Vidhana (lost-wax) method in Swamimalai, a region renowned for its masterful bronze casting, this ensemble is a testament to unparalleled artistry and deep spiritual significance. Lord Vishnu, the preserver and protector of the universe, stands majestically at the center, his four arms symbolizing his omnipotence and ability to act in all directions. In his hands, he holds his divine attributes – the discus (Sudarshana Chakra), the conch shell (Panchajanya), a mace (Kaumodaki), and a lotus flower, each representing different aspects of his cosmic power and his role in maintaining dharma. His serene expression and commanding posture convey a sense of divine grace and unwavering strength.

Embodiments of Prosperity and Earthly Grace

To his left stands Sridevi, the goddess of fortune, beauty, and prosperity, embodying Lakshmi. Her presence signifies abundance, auspiciousness, and the blessings of wealth that flow from Lord Vishnu. To his right is Bhudevi, the goddess of the Earth, representing fertility, nourishment, and stability. Together, Sridevi and Bhudevi represent the complementary forces that sustain creation and bring harmony to the world. In Hindu mythology, they are considered inseparable from Vishnu, signifying that the divine power of creation and preservation is always accompanied by prosperity and the nurturing embrace of the Earth. Their graceful stances and serene countenances complement Lord Vishnu's divine presence, creating a harmonious and powerful representation of the cosmic order. The intricate details of their attire and jewelry speak to the skill of the artisans, who have captured the divine essence of these revered deities in metal.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship: Panchaloha and Madhuchista Vidhana

The Panchaloha, a sacred alloy of five metals – gold, silver, copper, zinc, and iron – is revered for its purity and auspiciousness. Statues made from this alloy are believed to possess spiritual energies that can bring peace, prosperity, and well-being to the devotee. The Madhuchista Vidhana technique, also known as lost-wax casting, is an ancient and labor-intensive process that has been perfected over centuries by artisans in India. This method involves creating a wax model of the intended sculpture, which is then covered in a clay mold. The wax is melted and drained out, leaving a hollow cavity. Molten metal is poured into this cavity, and once cooled, the clay mold is broken to reveal the finished bronze sculpture. The intricate details achieved through this process, from the delicate facial features to the elaborate drapery and ornamentation, are truly remarkable. This set, standing at 13 inches in height, is a magnificent example of this traditional art form, bringing a piece of divine beauty and spiritual heritage into your home.
