This book attempts to offer a preview of the essential topics and key themes of the comic play The Pot of Gold (Aulularia) by the Roman playwright Titus Maccius Plautus, a comic poet of the Old Latin Period. This book is contemplated according to the CBCS curriculum for English Honours students of most Indian universities. Act wise detailed summary, critical analysis, thoughtful insights, and answers to important model questions have made this book an essential reading for English Honours students or any avid reader interested in literature.
Md. Bagbul Islam, a Post-Graduate in English Literature from Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University is currently working as an Assistant Professor of English in Vivekananda Maha-vidyalaya, Haripal under Burdwan University. He has excelled in critical and creative writings alike. His intense interest in world literature has earlier made him write erudite journal papers like ""Sceptical Reception of the Prophecies of Tiresias, The All Perceiving Blind Seer of Thebes,"" ""The Eulogy of Self-Annihilation in Contemporary Realistic Young Adult Fictions"" etc. Apart from teaching, he takes additional interest in Shakespeare, Mythology, and contemporary Young-Adult fictions. His first book, An Analytical Approach to Plautus' The Pot of Gold (Aulularia) is a must read for the students or any interested person.
For many years, Plautus was not given any place of distinction in our academic world. He was always judged and misjudged in comparison with the glory of other luminaries of classical literature like Sophocles, Aeschylus, Menander and many oth-ers. It is with great pleasure that this analytical study of Plautus' The Pot of Gold is introduced to the reader. This book has been prepared in accordance with the new syllabus prescribed by UGC within the CBCS pattern. Taking into consideration the challenges that most of the beginners will face in approaching the original text, I have essayed to keep the book as uncompli-cated and direct as possible. Titus Maccius Plautus, commonly known to us as Plautus, was a Roman dramatist of the Old Latin period who excelled in Fabula Palliata or Romanised version of Greek plays. Yet he rose above the servile emulation of the Greek New Comedy of Minander and Philemon. Plautine comedies attained acknowledgement due to his noteworthy adroitness at using humour and good sense without swerving into moralising and didactism. And yet, he is the least vener-ated and most imitated comic playwright of the ancient world. This book provides a detailed insight into the origin of comedy and the niche of The Pot of Gold in the entire corpus of European classical literature, including its contemporary social history, generic development, scene-wise detailed summary and critical commentary in an easily graspable manner. I have also provided answers to some broad type questions that may arise out of the prescribed text. I am extremely grateful to the publisher for having taken this initiative of publishing this book keeping in mind the long-felt needs of the student community.
