This book is revised version of my Ph.D thesis worked out at the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, Jawaharlal Nehru University.
New Delhi. The presence of Utsa Patnaik as the thesis supervisor in every step of this work with her deep insights and thoroughness had made it possible for me to successfully complete this research. A substantial revision of the original thesis was done at the Queen Elizabeth House, University of Oxford, where I received a fantastic work environment under the South Asian Visiting Scholar Programine. During that period I received the benefit of extensive discussions and written comments from Barbara Harriss-White. Amiya Kumar Bagchi and Madhura Swaminathan also enriched this work with thorough comments on original thesis.
