Preface
The state of Odisha, one of the richest reservoirs of natural and mineral resources of India, has a unique socio-cultural history. With India achieving independence on 15 August 1947, the princely states in and around Odisha surrendered their sovereignty to the Government of India and completely merged on 19 August 1949 giving birth to a new province of Odisha. The post-independence task for Indian leadership largely revolved round the issues of nation building, restructuring of socio-economic set up and above all securing and safeguarding national unity and territorial integrity. As part of the reorientation of a diverse socio-economic milieu, Indian government paid attention to provinces such as Odisha, which are impoverished and underdeveloped, despite possessing vast natural resources and great cultural heritage. In this context, this book delineates the social, economic and cultural history of Odisha both in the pre- globalisation period (1949-1991) and the post-globalisation era (from 1992 till date) through a comparative study.
