Book Description
About the Book
In the biographies of Sri Chaitanya like Murari Gupta's Sri Krishnachaitanya Chairtamrita, Kavi Karnapur's "Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita Mahakavyam and Sri Chaitanya Chandrodayam (drama), Brindabandas's Chaitanya Bhagbat, Jayananda's "Chaitanya Mangal', Lochan Das's "Chaitanya Mangal', Krishna das Kabiraj's Chaitanya Charitamrita ete. It is Nabadwip that has been mentioned as the place of birth of Sri Chaitanya. There was no controversy over the birthplace of Chaitanyadev prior to 1894 A.D. On 16th January 1894 Sri Kedarnath Datta the then Deputy Magistrate and Deputy Collector of Nadia District, on receiving a divine command and observing a miraculous light declared the char land of Mayapur to be the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya. Later on he bought land, erected temple and provided for the worship and upkeep of Mahaprabhu. Though Mayapur was propagated by Sri Kedarnath Datta as the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya neither history nor geography corroborates it. The book contains a detailed account of what still remains of the Nabadwip of Chaitanya's times after the devastations and formations of new territories caused by the relentless turbulence of the Ganga and the Jalangi.

About the Author
A native of the holy village Kshirgram in Katwa Subdivision under Burdwan District Sri Jajnaswar Chaudhuri became attracted to regional history since his adolescent days. He was inspired in this work by another great son of Kshirgram, Prof. Satyanarayan Mukhopadhyay of Nabadwip Vidyasagar College. It was from his mentor like dear Satyada that he learned that the history of Bengal remains hidden in relics like ramshackle temples, mosques, monasteries, pools and puddles, canals and lakes, names of sites lying here and there in utter neglect in hamlets, boroughs, fields, roadways and business hubs of Bengal. Since then he set himself to the task of finding out the data of regional history. Even after entering service life during his off days he noamed the villages of Burdwan with bag on his shoulder, umbrella on his head and pen, notebook and camera in hand and collected historical data. Its golden product. 'Burdwan: History and Culture' composed in three volumes was received in no time. This book has been highly applauded by learned Scholars. Sri Asoke Mitra (D.Sc. I.C.S.) wrote in a letter, 'you have become an object on envy of the historians'. Delving into the depth of history he gathered precious treasures which he has gifted to the lovers of history. His books published by Nabadwip Purattava Parishad are যুগস্রষ্টা শ্রীচৈতন্য (Epoch maker Sri Chaitanya), শ্রীচৈতন্যদেব ও সমকালীন নবদ্বীপ (Sri Chaitanyadev and Contemporary Nabadwip), একটি বিস্মৃত রাজধানী (A Forgotten Metropolis), আঞ্চলিক ইতিহাসচর্চা ও গ্রন্থপঞ্জী (Study of Regional History and Bibliography). Books edited by him reveal his creative wisdom and wonderful felicity of expression. Kanti chandra Rarhi's 'Nabadwip Mahima', Nadia in architecture and sculptrue, Poet Gangaram's 'Maharastra Puran' and 'Nadia in the study of regional history' etc edited by him and his highly thought provoking articles in the journal of the Nabadwip Purattava Parishad have broadened the Scope of the Study of Nabadwip and have immensely enriched the publication division of the parishad. The outcome of Sri Chaudhuri's ever expanding sphere and diversity of research is 'Cultural History of Rarh'. (রাডের সাংস্কৃতিক ইতিহাস) This book will ever remain as a monumental work in the study of regional history of Bengal for many many ages to come.

Preface
My greatly beloved friends and admirers Sri Jibankanai Saha, Sri Santiranjan Deb and Sri Nabendu Saha approached me with a request to translate the Bengali Version of Sri Jajneswar Chaudhuri's book 'Sri Chaitanyadev and Contemporary Nabadwip'. As I had never written any book in English earlier I was in grave doubt whether I would be capable of such a huge responsibility. Sometime later during a conversation with Sri Jajneswar Chaudhuri in a meeting of the Nabadwip Puratattva Parishad a reference was made of the book and Sri Chaudhri himself encouraged me to undertake this responsibility. Coaxed by my friends and well wishers I although bent with age and falling health, set myself to the stupendous task of trans-lating the book into English. I was in great apprehension whether I would be able to complete. The task, however by the grace of God, I have succeeded in achieving the goal. The book is now being in print. The labour and pain that I have suffered will be fruitful if the book can satisfy the readers. Let me hope that the hopes and aspirations of the authorities of the Nabadwip Puratattva Parishad will be fulfilled.

Foreword
On 16th January 1894 A.D (2nd Magh 1300 BS) a meeting was convened at A.V.School of Krishnanagar by the then Deputy Magistrate of Nadia Sri Kedarnath Datta. He said in that meeting that one night when he was on a visit to Tarakeswar he had a divine command in his dream that the Charland of Miyanpur is the birthplace of Chaitanyadev. In the summer of that year when he and his son Kamal were pacing on the roof of their house at Gadigaccha at dead of night they chanced to see a miraculous light in the char of Miyanpur. The two events namely the receipt of divine command and sight of a miraculous light in the charland made him sure that the charland of Miyanpur is the birthplace of Sri Chaitanyadev. Hence if the meeting permits him he may build temples in that charland and arrange for the worship of Mahaprabhu. The meeting for obvious reason gave him the permission.

Prologue
On Saturday the 23rd Falgun of the Saka era (27th February 1486A.D) during eclipse Sri Chaitanyadeb's advent took place at Nabadwip. This has been stated in the authentic and ancient books deal-ing with the divine activities of Chaitanya. That portion of ancient Nabadwip where Brahmin Palli was situated has been ravaged by the fury of repeated devastating floods in the eighteenth century. The Nabadwip described by Murari Gupta and Brindaban Das has now- a-days been transformed into hollow riverbed and sandy land. Even the geographical enviroment of Nabadwip of five hundred years ago has undergone a redical change. There is a divergence of opinion over the naming of Nabadwip. According to one view Nabadwip derives its name on account of con-glomeration of nine islands while according to another view the name of Nabadwip originated from the sight of nine burning lamps.
