Srimad Ramayana is the timeless classic written by Maharshi Valmiki describing the life and glory of Bhagavan Sri Rama. This Itihasa serves as a profound exposition of dharma.
Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahasannidhanam, the 36th and current Peethadheeshwara of the Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetham at Sringeri, has often instructed followers of Sanatana dharma to study the Valmiki Ramayana, imbibe its enduring wisdom and thereby sanctify their lives. The Ramayana enlightens us on the means to live in adherence to dharma. It equips us with the courage to stand up for dharma. It instills in us the strength to fight all odds to uphold dharma.
In this day and age, it is especially important that children are also introduced to the wisdom of the Ramayana at an early age. As per the directive of Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Sannidhanam, the 37th Acharya of the Peetham, this compilation of the Ramayana has been brought out to specially inspire young minds. This book is being brought out under the aegis of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham's Baala Bharati initiative to nurture young minds with the values of our Sanatana dharma.
This book brings together the sacred story of Bhagavan Sri Rama with the timeless beauty of Patachitra art from Odisha, one of India's oldest surviving painting traditions rooted in temple culture and storytelling.
By choosing this style, the Sringeri Math seeks to support traditional artisans and help keep this heritage alive. The book contains about a hundred illustrations conforming to the Patachitra tradition. The book's design uses colours, layouts and lettering inspired by graphic elements found in Patachitra, bringing a playful yet artistic grace that makes the book engaging for children.
This book is being released for the first edition of the 'Vajrotsava Bharati Rolling Shield' (an annual inter-school cultural contest to promote the values of Sanatana Dharma amongst children). The Rolling Shield is named after 'Vajrotsava Bharati'-a dharmic multi-approach movement of the Sringeri Math to commemorate the 75th Vardhanti (birth year) of Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahasannidhanam. It is our hope that children embrace this book as a cherished treasure that will guide them on the means to a life grounded in dharma.
With prayers to Sri Sharadamba and the Sringeri Jagadgurus that the children of today blossom into righteous individuals who will serve as the torchbearers of our sacred dharma.
