About the Author PERUNDEVI is a poet, writer and translator, who has been contributing regularly to the Tamil literary milieu across various genres over the past two decades. She has to her credit ten collections of poetry, including her recent works, Avan Kannatthil Hybrid Sevvarali Pookkirathu (2023) and Un Chinna Ulakatthai Tharumarakatthan Punarnthirukkiray (2021), two collections of translated poetry, two volumes of micro-fiction, and three essay collections, one of which focuses on literary criticism of modern Tamil poetry. In addition, she has also edited an anthology of essays on Ashokamitran's works. In 2022, she was a visiting writer-in-residence with the Asia Creative Writing Programme (ACWP) in Singapore. An academic with a PhD in interdisciplinary human sciences, she is now a Professor of Religious Studies at Siena College in upstate New York.

Introduction TAMIL SHORT STORIES were first introduced to me by my mother in the late 1970s, when I was a teenager. At the time, our family lived in Cuddalore, a coastal town in Tamil Nadu. Initially, I read selections from the collected works of Kalki and Jayakanthan, and later, moved on to stories published in weeklies like Ananda Vikatan. Even as I was enjoying this new pastime, my mother assigned me a task: every Sunday morning, in the front courtyard of the large rented house where four lower-middle-class families, including ours, lived as tenants, I had to read the stories aloud. My audience consisted of four or five women, aged between thirty and seventy, who listened attentively as they sorted greens, ground flour, folded clothes and made bead dolls. If I made any mistakes or faltered while reading, my mother would chastise me, 'Someone should put vasambu [calamus] in your mouth. What's the use of going to school if you can't read Tamil properly?'.
