Our wooden sculptures and carvings come in several different categories, with something for everyone. We have hundreds depicting Hindu gods. Our Vishnu sculptures for sale depict the Lord in many divine postures and attitudes. Vishnu is one of the most widely worshipped gods in all of Hinduism, with many believing him to be the ultimate source of existence.

In other traditions within Hinduism, Vishnu is seen as the sustaining god. Likewise, our wooden sculptures of Lord Shiva celebrate this great deity of the pantheon. Like Vishnu, many Hindus believe Shiva to be the fundamental principle of creation, and so they worship him and his consort with deep devotion. Still others believe him to be the destroyer god as part of a triumvirate with Brahma and Vishnu.

We also have wooden sculptures and carvings of Lord Krishna, avatar of Vishnu and god himself. There are also statues of many goddesses. Exotic India carries a vast array of wooden statues of the Buddha, the great enlightened one who revealed the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. Our Buddhist statues, handmade in India, allow you to enjoy the peaceful message of the Buddha wherever you live around the world.

To round out our stunning collection are statues of Ganesha, masks, and carvings of Apsara, one of the celestial dancers in the heaven of Indra. Our selection of handmade wooden art for sale is so wide that we have something for everyone looking to bring the art of India into their home.

FAQs

Q1 Why wood is good for sculpture?

Wood has been extensively used in making statues and sculptures for many centuries. It is lighter and softer than other materials and is therefore suitable to be carved into any desired shape or form. Apart from being cost-effective, it is relatively easier to carve fine details on wood than on stone. This makes it a good choice to go for wood sculpture.

Q2. Which wood is used for statues?

Wood is considered a good material for making fine sculptures because it is relatively softer than other metals such as stone and metal. There are many types of wood that are extensively used for statues such as Oakwood, Maple wood, Sweet Cherry wood, Ash wood, and Linden wood. These woods have a definite structure and a consistent texture. Most importantly, these are not too hard or soft and are therefore easy to manipulate with a chisel.

Q3. How do you take care of wooden statues?

Wooden statues being vulnerable to damage and fast decay, require a lot of care on a regular basis.

They should not be kept in places where there is excess moisture or humidity.

Regular dusting of the finished pieces with a dry cloth is necessary to avoid the accumulation of dust within deep spaces.

Avoid applying any alcohol-based liquids or solutions to the statue which can erode the surface of the wood.

Q4. How long do wooden statues last?

The nature of wood (whether hard or soft wood) is that it is highly vulnerable to damage, fire, and decay. Due to this reason, wooden statues should be taken care of regularly. Keeping them in an excessively moist place should be avoided. The lifespan of the statue depends on the type of wood used to create it and its maintenance. But the average lifespan of statues made of hardwood is around 15-20 years, while that of softwood would be around 5-10 years.

Q5. How do you clean wooden statues?

Wooden statues are prone to damage, fire, and rotting, and thus require proper care. In order to clean them, wipe them down using a dry cloth. This should be done regularly to avoid the accumulation of dust on the surface. Use wood-safe soap and mix it in water. Wash the statue with it and then place it in a ventilated area to let it dry.

Q6. What is the Best Wood for a Sculpture: Sustainability

Sustainable wood is timber that has been harvested responsibly from well-managed forests that are continuously replenished and ensure that there is no damage to the surrounding environment, or to native flora and fauna. Sustainably sourced wood minimizes the impact of logging on forests and the surrounding wildlife and communities.

Oak wood is best known for its durability and high rate of wear and tear. This type of wood comes in a variety of colors, from almost white to dark brown, making it quite versatile in terms of style. Simply because they're replaceable, fast-growing species like Pine trees tend to be more sustainable than slow-growing trees like Oak. Wood is a natural, renewable, and sustainable material for building.

Q7. How do you restore a wooden statue?

Cleaning and preparing wood sculpture for repair; Filling cracks and checks with filler; Remove any extra filler or mistakes; Sanding; Apply stain, wipe off extra stain, let dry; Prevent handling and touching of the carving; Protect the carving from excessive sunlight; Dusting carving regularly. The preserver treated wood should also be coated with a wood- oil, paint, or varnish.

These top-coat products seal in the preserver and provide protection against weathering and wear from direct contact. Can be preserved or restored by placing flat stones or furniture pads under the carving, to keep it elevated from the floor or other surface to allow continuous airflow, stabilizing the carvings.
